TC shudder?

I'm almost afraid to ask this because the stuff-to-fix list is already pretty long, but.....

I put a new TC in a couple of weeks ago. It seems that at cruise with very light throttle I get a shudder in the driveline. It's harsh at times. Feels like a high-speed wheel imbalance but occurs at lower speeds. I *think* it's only when the TC is locked (I need to wire up a manual cut-out to be sure). If I give it some throttle (thus unlocking the TC?) it stops.

It's a 9x11 3500 stall converter.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jim

i'm experiencing the same exact thing with a pat's 10" 3000 stall l/u. only 2-300 miles on it. don't know why.

While your holding the gas pedal steady try slightly pushing the brake, that will unlock the TC. Then see if it goes away.....

it does go away when it's unlocked. definitely the clutch. i'm also getting a noise from it at idle. i'm trying to get a replacement worked out. they'd better warranty it! like i said, only a couple hundred miles on it. i will let you all know how i make out.

Ditto here. The shudder definitely stops when the TC unlocks, but it doesn't shudder all the time. On the highway at a constant speed it locks and stays locked. It's only lower speeds for some reason.

Mine was making noise at idle but it's stopped that now that I have a few miles on it. It's either wishful thinking or my imagination, but I think the shudder is clearing up too.

I have to take the trans back out to replace the front seal anyway so I may send it out to have it checked.

that is a common malady for "performance" l/u converters....what is happening is it is luggng a bit under a light load and not unlocking.....the clutch is prolly fine

they are going to take care of mine under warranty. he said there shouldn't be any shudder at all. he said they have them in cars running 10's with the convertor locked in 2nd gear. i guess he'll let me know what went wrong when i ship the old one back. a buddy of mine had a similiar noise with a different convertor and i think he said that the stator support came loose??
