It pulls great mid and high just a little slow off the line. Do I need to change torque convertors?
That is definitely a step in the right direction. The TE-34 uses the same turbine wheel as both the TE-44 and TA-49 have. If it has our Precision .63 A/R turbine housing, I would recommend a torque converter change if you are looking for super fast spool up. There are some other less expensive things you can try, that others have reported as working.
#1 would be utilizing an RJC boost control valve. The RJC boost controller will help with spoolup, because it delays the boost pressure from reaching the wastegate actuator for a short amount of time. This delayed action works, by keeping the wastegate puck inside your downpipe/elbow, from prematurely opening. When the puck starts to crack open, it causes the much needed exhaust from spooling the turbine wheel quickly. Creating lag.
#2 would be to source a Garrett .63 A/R turbine housing that is machined to work with a Garrett T-31 stage 3 turbine wheel.
#3 would be, if you plan on running boost levels higher than 18psi on a regular basis, (meaning you run pump gas with alky injection) you could purchase a Heavy Duty wastegate actuator for your turbo. It keeps the puck closed longer, by requiring more boost pressure to overcome the internal wastegate diaphragm spring rate. This would also serve a similar purpose of what the RJC boost control valve does.
The T-31 turbine wheel does need a slightly looser torque converter than the stock D5 2200-ish range converter, when upgrading from stock to a larger turbocharger. If you don't want to mess with the boost controller, heavy duty wastegate actuator or sourcing a turbine housing, then a 2600-2800 stall lock up torque converter, such as a PTC 10" would fit the bill nicely.
