Is there a way to test an igntion module to see if it is bad? I am the lone TR in my area, so I don't have a known good to swap in. The coil pack ohms out ok so I am wondering if there is a test for the module?

If I do need a new one, would you trust this one from Advance Auto?

I am basically chasing down a cut out under high load. There is no knock according to the knock gauge and no abnormalities with the SES light or anything. The car otherwise runs great. I am going to have to capture some data with TurboLink, but I thought I'd start with the basics like the ignition first.

Some auto parts stores can test this for you. I would call around and see which ones could.

As far as a replacement module, I would definetly go with the GM one. I know they are more expensive, but in the long run it will be worth it. You get what you pay for.

Ive used an aftermarket ignition module and it failed within 3 months. Bought a gm unit and has been working great ever since.

Just my honest opinion.

I have always used the auto parts ignition modules and haven't had a problem with them and with the lifetime warranty they come with for $100.00 that's a pretty good deal.

What kind of warranty does the GM ignition module come with?

Autozone and advance auto parts can test them for you.

Thanks, guys. I think I will pull it and take it to Advance to have it tested. I'm kind of hoping it tests weak/bad so I have a good chance of that being my cut out under high load problem. ;)

Glen at NOS4GN has good prices & stands behind what he sells.
Caspers sells a coil tester but not a module tester that I know of? I would also use the GM ones & not the one from Advance myself. Personal choice I guess but thats an important part especially if you race the car much.

Yes, that was the problem. :) I can't imagine what it would be like owning these cars without the Internet and the great people out there on the forum.

ditto on Glen at NOS4GN and getting GM parts for ignition

caspers tester tests the coil while its on the module so it does test both , if you want he even has an adapter that allows you to test the wires at the same time . every gn owner should have the tool or access to one .

and the autozone modules (wells cast on bottom) are crap , they have a lifetime warranty and youll need it too, many code 42 bypass mode failures and timing errors with those , they wont even test on the casper tester
