Amazing. The auto manufacturers are ten years behind the RC car world

Lithium Ion and Lithium Polymer batteries are pretty much the standard there.

I was surprised they did not mention super capacitors which are poised to become the next breakthrough in battery technology.

One unfortunate thing about lithium batteries is their tendency to catch fire and explode when overcharged or shorted. Hopefully the auto manufacturers figure out how to make them completely safe from overcharging and crash shorts.

One part I found very humorous was this:

"Last week Mercedes Benz claimed a major breakthrough, announcing it will use lithium-ion batteries in its upcoming S-class hybrid, according to Automotive News. Due to go on sale in Europe in mid-2009 and the United States shortly thereafter, the vehicle, known as the S400 Bluetec Hybrid, is said to produce nearly 300 horsepower along with fuel economy of nearly 30 miles per gallon"

300 hp and 30 miles to the gallon? Hahahahahaha there better be a caveat to that they arent telling us. That's really unremarkable and quite pathetic if you ask me. Ls1s have been doing better than that for years.

the people with the money and power clearly are more interested to fill their pockets up more than do the right thing.the technology will be developed or released only when people's priorities come all the way around.i find it a conflict of interest when these decision are made by the very same people that benefit in any direct or indirect way.there are givers and takers never in between.

A lot has to do with marketing. I really don't have a use for and electric vehicle. Just doesn't fit my lifestyle. Maybe when the manufacturers come up with a vehicle that could tow and haul like my Suburban I'll take a look.

Current hybrids....

Watch the price of current hybrids fall through the floor when things like this hit the market. Makes you wonder how upside down those owners will be on a car that only gets 5-6mpg better than the full gas model. The technology is moving very fast, better to wait until insane MPG gains are seen before jumping on the bandwagon.
