Woops, it was 80.06. I knew I must have stuck a wrong key somewhere in there lol. (hitting self on head: pay attention moron!)
So how did those springs work out for you? You do race dont you?

And Mr. Clark, when you started to get concerned, did you go back and retro fit those 10 cars to the TRW's? :) I can definitely see, that your care what oil goes into your cars. You truly do care about your rides. Hell I would too man. Theres dummies here partin em out like nobodies business. I figure by next month, there will be around 75 gn's left on the planet... with 50% of them in your posession lol.

(by the way, did you get that nos air box in the for sale section? i know its a VERY obscure part, that is NEVER left in tact on peoples cars, and is almost ALWAYS discarded)

No problems so far on the stock heads and yeah they've both been raced some. High 11's on pump gas and alky. on heavy stockers both over 3850 race weight.

Get some Felpro Viton valve seals for the job too.

Lots of people have posted good luck with the Kirbans springs as well so they may not be a problem in most cars, but I thought they were a bit high for stock replacements, and definately wouldn't use the cups with those springs.

Plenty of people have used the CC980's with good results and no cups, some have used the cups as well.

I never checked how much force they have now used.

Let me say though if I bought another car, or cam., I'd PM or email Mr. Clark to check my springs, I no longer have access to my machine (it's in Mexico now), even new ones from the major vendors should be checked since some have reported variations.

I'd even look into the TRW's since data has now been posted for them.

answer to a couple questions-------yes i did change those springs-----i actually changed them to the LT1 iron head spring #10212811 with the GN damper added------makes them 83/195 which is the upper end of the GN spec---------the alum head LT1's used 10206040------different spring-----its amazing how someone can "look" at a spring and tell you what tension it is--------i find that true about oil and how folks like to talk about chemical composition without actual lab tests-----or from using one year (or older) lab tests posted on an internet fourm that is nothing but an Amzoil worship temple-------oh well i'll deal with those issues a little later when i get time---------as for parting out the cars i can only say that i can remember when i was young in the early 70's i remember folks parting out dodge hemis, 396/427 chevys and gto's for chicken feed------DUMB!!!-------i too was dumb-------i live in burlington nc----if you ever followed drag racing in the 60's and 70's you surely have heard of the team of SOX and Martin--------in the early 80's i bought a building from ronnie sox and buddy martin on tucker st in burlington------it was a 22,000 sqft 12 door garage that they had used as their shop------it was full of racing stuff as well as about a dozen car lifts------i had no interest in cars at the time and i junked everything and had the lifts torn out and hauled away-----i used the building for storage & warehousing--------i can tell you a story that tops this one by a long shot but i will save it for another day when i can bear to tell it-------oh well we live and learn--------as for the air cleaner i guess i missed it-----i don't remember seeing it but i'm not hurting------ i have nearly a dozen NOS ones ------and over several hundred used ones that i have collected over the years!!!!!no kidding...........RC

Cool, thats good to know salvage. thanks :)

And Mr. Clark, Yea, I know of sox and martin. you junked all that 'racing stuff' and lifts?
lol, ahh well, we live and learn, you're right. thats why i still have all the stock stuff to my buick, and will never add any permanent mods. Ill never bore my block, or sell my air box or stock turbo either. :) I'm not stupid (like everyone else is)
I go to car shows, but instead of just wandering aimlessly like 99.9% of attendees do, I actually pay attention. I choose (im only 34) to hang out with all the old school guys, and talk with them. theyre wiser, and have more history to share. But everytime they talk, they all say one thing in common..."MAN I wish I hadnt sold the original block to this car..." when referring to their mint 69 camaro, or gto...
I will try my hardest, to never be like them... I watched a guy come up to the owner of an early 70's, cream white, all mint, factory, numbers matching superbee, and offer him 6 digits right on the spot. (he turned it down too lol)
Yep, keep on sellin off your stuff guys... Ive said it for years and I'll say it again. You may try all that "well I dont CARE about originality, it's meant to DRIVE." now, but I know better. When you guys are like 65, and done building up these stage motors for drag racin, and all you want to do now, is cruise your buick at 35 mph, youre going to wish like hell you still had all your stuff... :) And I'm going to pull up next to you in my factory gn, and you know good and god darn well how much these cars are going to fetch 15 years from now ( estimate a nice factory stocker to fetch upwards of 45 grand).. and you're going to be jealous as hell

Oh and one more thing. I was thinking of posting the post of "Whats the fastest anyone has been, thru the stock airbox and maf tube." in the general tech area, but since youre an expert on stock, what say you? Any speculation on how fast one could take a stock airbox car to?

Probably 11's with a K+N filter in the stock air box.

There's someone on the boards that runs that setup, perhaps 11's on pump and alky. as well.

I don't really see the point of it since letting the car breathe is easy with DIY mods. :)

yea, but im an experimenter. i like to check stuff out that other people normally dont. :) i love the stock appearance of a gn.

yikes-----surprise, surprise, surprise----------check out the thread on "how fast through the stock air box started by t6smk

Does anyone have any data on the new (100 #) springs that come with the champion iron and aluminum heads-spring rates etc? Has anyone ever tested these?

Thought I would revive this old thread with some data I found on the Kirban springs I have with the internal dampers (they've been on the shelf for several years), and see what Richard thinks about what I should do.

1. 110/260
2. 106/258
3. 109/262
4. 104/259
5. 105/258
6. 100/253
7. 105/260
8. 109/265
9. 104/256
10. 108/259
11. 105/258
12. 108/260

I had hoped to install these on the orginal engine I'm putting back together after a clean up and freshen up. All orginal hard parts (except new bearings/cam/lifters). Plan on using a stock to 200 flat tappet cam (budget restrictions).

Should I use these or look at a different scenario?

Dave a real nice set of springs are the Comp 979's. Red Armstrong turned me on to them 11 years ago and thats all I use on the stock replacement mild FT stuff.

Ive had them in my engine for 80k and it will still rev to 5500 plus no problem I hit 6 k once when I had too light of gov in my trans.

They are a few lbs over stock and are a better choice for stock and mild FT grinds IMO. This is in comparison to CC980's and LT1's as far as overwhelming teh HYd lifter plungers/foot and lobes on the cam. Not sure what the Kirbans ones are

Comp Cams 979-12 Comp Cams Single Valve Springs

Less than 35 bucks and flat work.

Do the 979's require the stock spring cup??

There's not much info on that site. What are the load specs for those springs?

because I don't think I saved mine.

I wonder if Richard has tested 979's??

I have a set of those here someone used for about 100 miles but have never tested them. He had no issues with about 100 miles on a fresh engine with a few track passes.
