My wife and I have some airfare miles to burn and were thinking about going to San Francisco for a weekend this spring and I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a nice hotel in that area that is not too overpriced. Also, is March a good time to go up there?

Thanks,
Mike

I suggest you stay in the Fisherman's Wharf area. Much to see and do in that area not to mention all the boats are there if you want to take a trip to Alcrataz or do the bay area sightseeing trip.

My family and I took a trip last year and we absolutely had a blast.

Do a search on San Francisco so you can look up Hotel's in the Fisherman's Wharf area.

Maxwell:biggrin:

The wife and I stayed at the Maxwell for a few days and it was nice. It wasn't that far from fishermans warf either. I think it was like a block from the cable cars. Anyhow, I would advise you to get a travlers book. They publish tons of great info on tours and places to eat.

And.....

You could visit me!:D

I am about 1.5 hrs from there. If you need any info , contact me at work and I can give you several options depending on price range and exactly what you wish to do.
March will be chilly rainy, foggy type weather ranging from the mid 40's to 68.
Some days you may never even see the Bay with the marine layer. (Fog)
Fishersman's Wharf is great, and you would enjoy that. Pac Bell park is beautiful that's where the SF Giants play. Lots of neat things to do and Chinatown is cool too. Be prepared to see things you have never before......trust me. I had Joe Burkhart out here from CT and we stopped at the wharf for crab before heading back up here. He wasn't off the plane 40 minutes and we are walking down the street at the wharf. A "street performer" which you will come to know, jumps out of a doorway to do his act and Joe cocks his left arm back to drop the guy! I reach over grabbing onto his arm so he doesn't just drop this poor guy doing his little "act" ! It was frickin hilarious!!! I said to Joe, "Your not off the plane an hour and it already has you beat". LOL You will see what I mean.
Anyway, if you need anything contact me.
Plus, there are a ton of Bay Area guys , who are great guys and you should try to hook up with. One off the top of my head is Dean Nelson. He goes by DEAN on the board. Great guy!!! Plus Mark E and others. Great bunch of people.
All would be willing to give ideas and help out.

Let us know

If you like wine, rent a car and head out to Napa! Its well worth it!

Thanks for all the info! I may have to look some of you guys up when we're out there. Since March is a bad month to go, what would be a good month?

If the guy behind you drops some change...........DON'T bend over to help him pick it up! Say hi to Pelosi for me when you're there! A friend of mine recently went there with his family (he's from B.C., Canada) and had a guy drop trouser right in front of him AND his kids and take a DUMP in the parking garage. So, Bruce is VERY correct about what you'll be "exposed" to. With free airfare, I would try Hawaii, Alaska, Seattle (though Seattle runs a CLOSE second to SF in regards to FREAKS!) There IS alot to see and do in SF, BUT be very prepared to expand your horizons:eek:

I've been to San Francisco a couple of times now; it's an interesting town for sure. Last time the wife & I were there (wife was attending a visual literacy conference) was the same weekend as the gay pride parade... it was ummm interesting to say the least.

Napa is cool & very scenic, we did the wine train tour which is a little pricey but well worth it IMHO. If you rent a car & drive yourself, stay away from the big name winery's, for the most part they are just too "corporate feeling. You'll have a lot more fun checking out smaller places like Ravenswood & Frog's Leap.

China town is well worth a look, but the main sreet is pretty touristy but cool for some cheap souveniers. If you want a real taste of the neigborhood go a block or two off the "beaten path" and check out a Chinese pharmacy. Little Italy is right next to Chinatown & is worth a look too, esp if you're into coffee.

Fisherman's Wharf is cool too, but the "main" draw Pier 39 is VERY corporatized tourist trap but the San Francisco Bay Aquarium IS worth going to there & you can get a good view of the sea lions who've claimed part of the boat docks. If you want some REAL chowder or crab, check out some of the smaller cafe's & walk-up places closer to the Red & White or Blue & Gold tour ship docks. The ferry terminal is also a nice place to go, it's a little corporate, but if you can go on a Farmer's Market day there'll be some great fresh fruit & food vendors. Last time we went, they had the free range chicken and organic beef vendors directly across from the vegan products booths... there were plenty of dirty looks being passed back & forth along that row. :)

Haight / Ashbury IMO can be interesting if you're into the punk - alternative scene & there are some good low priced food choices for lunch there (Grill Askew had some great tenderloin ka-bobs & grilled vegetables), but there are a lot of derelicts / homeless / street people there too so be careful & if you go to the nearby park for the Asian garden (very pretty) you DON'T want to be there after dark at all!

Muir Woods is just over the Golden Gate Bridge ($$ toll!) is very scenic & is the starting point for some very cool hiking trails, some which'll take you down to the coastline. Tiburon and Sausalito across the Bay are neat towns, good food & neat scenery but pricey if you wanna shop. The Monteray Bay Aquarium is VERY cool, makes for a nice day-trip... along that route you can check out Carmel & the 17 mile drive as well.

Hope this helps,

Doug C.
