This is getting ridiculous. Firebird and Camaro. The Firebird apparently caught the shoulder on the right side and over corrected. Went left across 3 lanes, a median, and 3 lanes going the other direction. Hit a car head on although somewhere along the line he turned his car completely around and hit the other car with the back end of his. Two people in the other car are injured. He's dead. The right rear wheel in his car was nearly to where the door bolts on. You would think a straight stretch of a divided six lane road would be reasonably safe. But it obviously isn't. Street racing isn't drag racing.

Your right street racing is street racing.I suppose no one has ever gotten killed at the strip either

I love street racing but I guess it really depends if you can actually drive a car as to if you should be doing ANY kind of racing.

You're correct. And some places don't have a convenient track or one at all. We have 3 1/8 mile and 1 1/4. I won't tell you I've never street raced but the way we did it was late at night on long straight deserted stretches of highway with lead and trailing cars with cb radios. (remember those). Sure there are accidents at tracks and sometimes innocent people are involved. But there is also assumption of risk, something the other party in this incident did not have. You can reduce but not eliminate the risk on the street. Unfortunately most don't. The previous incident was in a residential area through a school zone. I don't even test on the street. I'll spend the $10 to go to the track. Tickets are just too costly and I'm not that interested in jail time.

More people were killed in street racing in San Diego last year, then in all of motorsports. And that's just one county. It wouldn't be so bad if they were just killing each other, but it seems more then 1/2 the deaths are just innocent bystanders, drivers.

Reguardless of the driver, dodo happens and noone can out drive everything.

Here in FL, the roads are so bad and the trafic just don't seem to allow street racing anymore, but I am getting old too!

I have some client's that have a collection of exotic's. I went along ONCE with a group of them. Late night on I-95 in Nothern Palm Beach County, I didn't even want to try and look at the speedo. All I could think of was I wish I was driving and I hope none of the group hits any crap in the road.

Most of the street racing I see going on within high trafic areas don't seem to be worth talking about. I think I might be in the hunt with one of my company trucks...:D

Deaths in San Deigo?? 98% of em are ricers with SLOW cars that think theyre fast.

Talkin about street races in high traffic areas?? Ricers again.

Get rid of the F&F types and ill bet you the death rate from street racing ALMOST disappears.

no matter what you drive import or domestic racing on the street is stupid and immature! period end of story!

dont give me this cock and bull story about how it can be done safe and ......

the fact remains its on the street in an UNCONTROLED enviroment.

there is no valid argument to say street racing is safe if you do this............

your full of sh!t if you think its safe cause you have certian proceedures and such.

This is why we need more tracks to be built.

The tracks that are out there are so few and far between, that if you can get to them you get 2 runs in if you stay the whole day.

My closest 2 are each 2 hours (crappy track) and 3 hours (decent track) away. There used to be an old airport strip around here that they would setup on weekends, but no more.

If I ever came into a lot of money, one of the first things I would do would be to build a track. Some of the bigger cities around me do have a street racing problem, but like I said, the tracks just arent there. How many people want to load up their car, drive 3 hours, pay 30-40 to get in a few runs, then go home...???

There is one in development closer to one of the cities here, set to open in June. Its still only an 1/8 mi, and still about an hour 45 away, but its a start.

Its like telling people who like to play football that they have to go rent an arena or field if they want to play anymore. You cant play football in the park because you might hurt some innocent bystander with your game. You never know when a child will get in the middle of things chasing after a ball or something. Of course, there arent any medics, officials or marked yardlines in the park. How many of you would still play football in the park and risk getting caught?
Skateboarding is illegal here in town. Most kids didnt care and did it anyway. The town finally listened to the complaints and built a skate park for them. The boarders arent on the streets anymore. Funny how that works.
Drag racing is a sport like any other, although with more danger. But the principle is still the same.

Although I'm not 100% innocent, the rise in street racing is starting to clutter the streets at night. I'm only 21 and the rush from racing is better than drugs! I agree with the post about building more tracks. There is a couple tracks, but they are far away and a lot of people can't go. If I had the $$ I'd build one. Here in the Springs people have turned the Cruise Spot into the drag strip. I love to see groups of cars and meet people that share the same interests. But Its getting so dangerous, and the law is cracking down!! Maybe a wealthy person will read these posts and donate to the cause!!! When my Girlfriend wins the powerball I will build a couple. If your city dosen't have a track, start making some noise. The same thing happened with the skaters here, now theres a couple new skate parks.. A squeaky wheel will get some oil eventually!!

I think people who post threads like this should seperate "street racing" from "wreckless driving".

For those of you who street race (organized drag race setup by people who actually KNOW how to drag race, on a road where there isn't traffic) know exactly what I mean.

Racing the car next to you on a street with traffic is just plain stupid. I GUARANTEE that 99% of the "street racing" accidents that we hear about are actually WRECKLESS DRIVING morons who have no experience with drag racing. Swerving in and out of traffic while looking out your window to see how far behind the guy you are racing is NOT street racing.

We pull off HUNDREDS of street races every year in chi-town. There are always exceptions but the *MAJORITY* of the guys out here that street race, have drag racing experience and know how to handle their own cars without being stupid.

WRECKLESS DRIVING does not equal STREET RACING.

PERIOD.

I gotta agree with the above.. EVERY single accident within ear shot of me has ALWAYS been a case of wreckless/stupid driving not the "race" itself.

I cant help but notice when I go to the track and watch some 16 second cars (it gets boring sitting in the pits waiting for my class at times) that I see which ever winged idiot is in front TURN AROUND while racing to see where his apponent is... WTF is that? I see it on the street when also when two of these same kind of knot heads go after each other at a light. Inevidably the one in front will turn around to see how far ahead of the other car they are. Is it just me or is it completely stupid to turn around in ANY vehicle while at WOT????? No, its not just me its just flat out stupid.

Whats with the weaving from lane to lane with your lowered/winged/fart tipped/~75hp import? If you want to feel lateral Gs then thats fine....and I can relate but WTF is the purpose of doing it if youre only going ~20mph and stuck behind rush hour traffic? Are you trying to keep some heat in the tires? Well, thats nice and all but exactly what is that heat youre building gonna do when youre stuck in stop and go traffic and/or driving through the middle of town? Expecting to find a slolam coarse set up at a cross walk?

Ugh, why do I even waste my time getting ticked off at these idiots... I just wish I could run across one when Im driving the beater 4x4 that wears dents like a medal of honor :D .

I ran last night at the county airport. Watched a Talon not stop in time, and spin out into the mud. Took 7 of us to push him out.

Always check to see where the end of the runway is.;)

EXACTLY. The problem is, there are a lot of people in these parts that don't understand the difference in the two...

Had my GN for a few months and I don't play on street racing it... Well around here, the street races are set up horribly =/.

Even though we have a couple tracks in the near vicinity, there is a lot of street racing and we have had a number of tragic fatalities. I did my share of street racing in the early '70's but there was a lot less traffic then and more open spaces. I don't condone it and remind my son when he has the GN out to use his head. It's not worth it.
