"CLICK & CLACK : Get It Straight
My girlfriend and I are having a disagreement. I have my eye on a classic 1969 Buick Electra 225. It's in very good condition. The interior is immaculate, the paint job is excellent, and the engine is clean and strong. The previous owner kept it garaged and had a lot of work done to bring it to near-mint condition. I plan to drive the 225 as my everyday car. My girlfriend says that buying a 30-year-old car as an everyday car is just asking for trouble. She says if anything goes wrong, I would have trouble finding replacement parts and a mechanic able to work on something so out of date. She says a huge car would be difficult to maneuver in this small-car world. She says my money would be better spent on a more modern used car. She says it would have more modern safety features, be easier to maintain and be more practical as an everyday car. What do you think? -- Moe
TOM: I think everything she says is true, Moe. But you should get the Buick anyway.
RAY: I agree. Not every decision we make is a practical one. When you decided to date your girlfriend, did you sit down and make an Excel spreadsheet and consider all of her assets and liabilities? No. You probably looked at her and said, "Cute, cute, cute!"
TOM: The Electra 225 is beckoning you the same way. It's speaking to you, Moe. Answer it. And if the biggest issue for her is that she's just embarrassed to be seen in it (face it, she thinks it's a "pimp car," Moe), agree to take her car whenever you guys go out together.
RAY: But this will be a good test for the relationship. If she lets you have the car and remains good-natured about it, even though she knows it's a stupid idea, that's a very good sign for the future.
