Those of you with ported irons who done your port work.I was looking at a set of champion irons or a set from Jack Merkel. Where do you guys think is the best place to get a set from. The heads on my car now I done my self and I think that might be whats hurting my mph with a 7.06 I think I should be running 98 to99 mph. Thanks for any help.

I did have a 400 turbo becase i didnt want to to be replacing the 200r4 and broke the converter 3 times so i went to a 200r4. Now I can run 85 on the interstate and only turn 2100rpm. Doesent seem to hurt it to much 1.54 60ft on the foot brake.

Had a local firm (Ladds Porting and polishing, Elkridge, MD) port my heads because the machine shop said they only charge a small amount.
For the price they charged I was getting very close to some nice aftermarket heads. Looks like they did a very good job.

You could try Chuck Leeper at Cody Motorsports or Nick Micale. They're both board ,members here and do good work.

Sitting here thinking the heads may not be my problam Iam still running a stock tb will it flow enough air to support ported heads? It doesent make any difference in 27psi or 31psi of boost so that tells me something is not flowing enough. What do you guys think.

I don't think 95 is that bad...I am looking at my run sheet and have lots of "7.0x" 1/8 at 95 to 97 mph all with 1.5x 60' times...to run 98-100, 1/8 looks like 7.04 - 6.98 with very low 1.5 60's

my car is tuned for the 1/4 which may slow it down when compared to a 1/8 mile car............I know if I was quitting at the 1/8, I could go much faster...et wise, but not much more mph

I run a stock (ported to 62mm) throttle body

Yea but that 7.06 @95 was with the the t66 and 31psi. I had allready went a 7.16@95 with a t62 and 30 psi. Iwould have thought the 66 would have made more of a difference. Also I know dynos arent every thing but with the t62,big neck ic, and a 400 turbo trans the car made 413hp and 525tq at 27 psi. With the t66 front mount and a 200r4 at 27 psi it made 456hp and 607tq I could only get the pull to start at 4800rpms so I know the tq number would be higher so were is the hp. Could the porting I done on the heads do this. Just a thought.

the '66 did make a difference....looks like at least .1 assuming equal 60' times.....et goes down, speed usually goes down some also......to know if you picked up power, just dog it off the line and check mph...should be more than 95

hmmmm....just re-read your post....31 psi? I typically run 23-4 lbs, so maybe the heads do make a difference? at 31 psi, my motor would go bang!

TPS/ Taylor Performance Systems. Awesome race engines and cylinder heads. Flow bench and dyno by Super Flow. This is my brothers business. He does all of my customers cylinder heads and machine work. I run ported irons on my GN and yellow T. E-mail me if you want his number.

I know you have to have a good flowing engine to make hp but do you have to have a good flowing engine to make tq? I think my tq numbers are good 607 @4800rpms I think it would be atleast 650@ 3500rpms. I am just wondering were the hp is bacause it takes hp to make mph. btw same mph slickes or radials. I also have made a 1/4 mile pass went 119 on radials but the track was terriable broke loss at 1/8 mile mark. Going to a good track this weekend going to try for 10s. Thanks for all the help.

Ported heads will help your engine breath better and make power more easily. If you can't get it in and out,you make as much power.:D

Untouched TB here, on ported irons. 7.21@100.5 in the 1/8.

Hey Craig-
That is impressive MPH in the 1/8th. I just ran a 7.1 this last sunday @ 96 MPH with ported irons @ 21 lb boost. TE51 turbo and front mount. Obviously you are making great HP and torque. Keep it up! I am also gunning for the 10's in the 1/4. Of course when the temps in Texas get below 70 deg (it was 96 sunday), i think i will get there.

When you say "done yourself" what did you do to them. Your performance for the amount of boost you run does seem a little off. I've seen cars with a smaller turbo than yours run 7.1's@98 with only a three angle valve job and no porting at 22 psi of boost.

Its hard to make the stock heads flow worse than stock, but it is possible. If you do a lot of material removal on the intake port floors, that can really screw up the flow. Enough that it could cancel out a lot of other porting that you may have done.

If you didn't do anything drastically wrong while porting the heads and you are sure the cam and boost gage are good, maybe it's a completely unrelated transmission problem.

ungn most of the work I done was in the exhaust side gasket match and raised the roof on that side. Intake side gasket match and took the short turn out. And cleaned the sharp edges and rough places in the bowl. Most every thing else was polishing the rough edges out.

7.206 @ 96.77 @ 25 PSI with stock heads, stock valve springs, stock TB, stock, stock, stock...

:)

Heads up

Hi Mr. Malibu,
That is a good Mph for home ported heads, how much stall are you running? I know with the stock converter you can pick up MPH by locking it up. Also if you run some cam, you can allow the heads to work even better. Right now I am running too big of cam so it is hurting my ET but my MPH is still the same. I just need to decide how much stall to get. :)
Peachs

PS. STP can help you get some crazy MPH!
