I am doing a timing chain replacement, and GNTTYPE.org recommends this item for this job.

What the heck is this thing and where do I get it?

Hey, up until recently all I have ever worked on was small block Chevys, so cut me some slack :p

Thanks,

It is a plastic block that is spring loaded on the passenger side of the block. It holds tension on the timing chain to remove slack as the chain stretches. It is really a great idea!
You can get the blocks from the local auto parts store. The GM dealers can still get them as well. It probably wouldnt hurt to replace the spring at the same time. Its like < $15 worth of parts.
Make sure you only use it with the stock style link chain. You will cry if you try to use it with a roller chain. The blocks will either dissintegrate or break off with the roller.

I got a speed pro steel timing chain (Speed Pro timing set part No. 220-3129)... damned if I know whether it is a roller or not.

If it is a roller should I just forget about it?

Thanks,

IMHO, the replacement chain should look like the stocker. The one thing you do want to change is to replace the nylon cam gear with an all metal one. That is it. I prefer stock. They are durable and are designed to be slack free with the chain tensioner. You cannot do that with a roller. The roller will also stretch so whether it is actually better is a moot point.
I have a TRW stock replacement chain and gears on my car. I think all 3 pieces set me back < $20 locally.

a roller chain will look like 2 bicycle chains side by side

a stock replacement with be flat across the back side.

i have run a roller chain before in my buick and did not like it (noisy) and now i'm running a stock replacement chain set from autozone but get a GM TENTIONER i bought one from advance when i put my in and it broke ...i now have a used stock one in it and its fine so far.

While you are at it dont forget to update to a roller type cam button!!! I did this job over the winter myself with good results! Good luck, Mike
