timing chain

hey everybody
im looking to replace my timing chain and i want to get a few suggestions from you. im thinking double roller btw so if anyone knows a good one and maybe some parts numbers it would be much appreciated.

No need for a double roller in a mostly stock motor with bolt ons and stock cam.

Single row Cloyes chain steel gears.

Do a search on the install as there's tons of tips on what to do and not to do.

I used a postons chain and gears first car, local parts store for the other car.

Oh, drop the pan for the front gasket part.

while you are in there you might want to replace the cam button with the updated roller bearing. i didn't know about this until after i did mine and 2 weeks later the cam started chucking causing a off-idle knocking. off hand i cant find the part # but i'm shure you can get it.

probably a good time to do the rear main as well since you're going to be under there.

Here is everything you need. I just got all these parts and installing this weekend.

GM roller cam button (updated) #25532588
New Tnsioner #25532546
New Spring #1358909
Cam bolts (2) #325522648
Cloyes timing chain/gears #C3018

I also went with a new HV cover, water pump and oil pump. Going to to the front and rear seals also. That should get you started.

Got the HV cover with oil pump from Silver Seal $135 shipped then got new water pump at local parts store.

Are all these part #'s GM? Also does the Cloyes timing chain/gears come from local auto parts store? Sorry I need it broken down a little more for me.

Yes all are GM parts except the timing chain and cover. I got all the GM parts from GMpartsdirect, still cost less than a dealer unless you know someone there. Got the timing chain from a local parts store. Napa, AutoZone and Advance all carry the chain $16. New water pump $30. I also got all new FelPro gaskets and a new cork pan gasket from SETurbo. The New HV cover from Silver Seal is 6571HI

All good info here.
Do yourself a favor and buy a stock replacement timing set from the dealer. Guarenteed not to throw your timing off. Keep in mind you might need a new cover, too.

Last I heard is that the timing set from the dealer has the same nylon cam gear that came on the cars when new...Not a good move, IMO...Why take a chance with the nylon gear teeth cracking and breaking off??? Just go to the parts store and get the stock steel replacement set that they sell, and get the rest of the parts like was explained in the above posts...

That's correct Jim. The GM set does have the nylon cam gear. The last one I pulled off was the original, had 130,000 miles and more than 100 passes on it and it looked like new, no cracks, wear or teeth missing. I replaced it with another and have put 20,000 more miles and 200+ more passes on it and it's still hangin' in there. Of course I wouldn't recommend it for a 9 or 10 second car, but the last I heard there were no stock replacement sets out there that weren't off timing at least a little. Maybe that has changed. I sure hope so. Anyone out there found one they no for a fact is dead on?

hey thanks guys,
i really appreciate all the great info you guys are awesome.
unfortunately the replys were a day late and a dollar short so to speak as the chain has been in for a couple weeks now. if anyone is interested i went for the double roller from cloyles for the hell of it and man it is a good looking peice. but anyway thanks again.

Hope you didn't install the tensioner back in there with that DR Most of the DR chains will chew them up. DR is only recommended if you have stronger springs.
