Is there really a way to set timing on these cars or does the ecm do it all I've read stuff like 25degrees atdc for the crank on compression stroke with the cam sensor at low volts proving it's closed. Is this true or what????

You can set the timing through most modern chips. You just need to verify that what the ecm sees is accurate as far as timing goes, and then yes, you can control it. There's a separate thread somewhere and on vortex buicks about setting the cam sensor and that's where the 25* thing comes into play.

Do I need to use a scanmaster to do this

Which part? Adjust the timing, yes, set the cam sensor, no.
I heard an 87 and it sounded different from mine like my car is running advanced or something my sounds like wow the 87 didn't do much for me it was less responsive

For the cam sensor I know I just need a volt meter, when I went to set it I got it down to .5v it wouldn't go any lower I added 50lb injectors and a TT chip I'm still using the 85 ecm I have the 87 ecm but need a new chip for that to install

That's a lot of variables.
As for now the car runs great but I need to upgrade the ecm and hook up my scanmaster to really know what's going on. I thought I could manually set the timing from what I read, but I guess not

When I finished rebuilding the motor the cam sensor was 180 out and it ran but pig rich cylinders flooded with fuel. Then I flip the cam sensor and got great results which is another reason I thought by spinning it would help timing

Nope, it's either right or not; no adjustment of timing with the cam sensor.

As stated above, the only thing the cam does is tell the computer witch is #6 to as to start spraying fuel in the right places.
