is adding timing something to avoid if possible? if so why? From the threads I've read I assume/deducted that the less timing one has to add the better.
 
No, you need the correct timing for the fuel you are using. Not enough is less bad than too much but both are less than an ideal tune.

my understanding is all cars are different, some like more boost less timing others prefer more timing less boost. I have played with both to find what my car likes. with the timing at 21 degrees I cant get much more than 23 PSI of boost without seeing knock. If I dial back the timing to 18 degrees at WOT my boost thresh hold increases to 27-28 psi my car seems to like more boost than timing.
