To anyone that has removed a tranny in garage

I raised my TTA basically as high as I could on a set of 4 large jack stands making it level. I used a trans jack, and it went in like butter.

I dont even raise up the back just the front when I do them.

A 3' long extension and swivel socket helps a lot.

Just removed mine today using a quick jack which raises the front of car 21”.
Also used a proper transmission jack .
Had to tip the transmission off the jack pad after lowering & slide out on the floor after removing drivers front wheel,
with my Hughes deep pan (2” deeper than stock). Luckily the PVC flooring on my garage floor allowed the transmission to be dragged smoothly & easily across the floor.
Needed a 2nd pair of hands to do, but wasn’t bad at all.

Cardboard works well too. Lay it down on it and pull it out.

Typically its a fairly miserable 2 hours or so.

Getting it out is pretty easy. getting it back in is a pain. I use a motorcycle jack but its a really cheaply made one and the jack goes a little sideways so I have to make sure its facing in a direction that will help the trans go in instead of hinder it due to the angle.

Basically every time I do it I swear I'm going to buy a lift. one of these days I will.

Get you a jack like this. It tilts fore and aft as well as side to side. Stabbing a trans with one couldn't be easier.

Twice. 77 Blazer with turbo 350 and NP-203 transfer case. About 20" off the floor and used a floor jack
with a piece of steel about 10"x10" bolted to the jack plate by myself, ah, to be young again, or at least younger. Had to of course split them and getting them out wasn't too bad.
Going in, chained the trans to the plate and it went in fairly decent but the case, not so much being the shape of it. But
once you got one bolt started you could twist it around to get the others in. Doubt I could do it today without a dedicated jack and a bit of help.

seriously, assume the car is going to rock some and could fall over if on jackstands and so put a row of concrete blocks under the frame rails at the back and under the front crossmember so you will have space to survive that .

I pulled a T56 from my Camaro in the garage. Get it as high as you safely can! I had to drop it on my stomach and scootched out. Prob not possible with an auto.

This weekend I am going to pull it. I am going to buy one from Harbor Freight...450lb capacity. Kinda looks like the one that XLR8NGN has from the back. It is made by Pittsburgh, like 140 bucks or something like that.

I have one of those, it worked really good.

Now I have access to a lift and went in half on a real transmission lift like the one below with my buddy .

if you're going to buy the cheapest motorcycle jack on amazon to do it; be warned that it must be facing the correct direction or it will lean opposite the angle of the car.
