I was wondering if it is better to use a gutted cat or a high flow cat for performance use?
Would using a high flow cat eliminate some of the black soot that comes out the tail pipe while warming up at idle? Since the cat converter would cause the exhaust to be hotter coming out the end.
Please let me know your thoughts.

My 'high flow' cat. cost me .2/2 mph in the 1/4 and it did not prevent black soot at idle. Since I live in NC and have emissions testing, I drive the car with a now gutted cat. and use a good cat. for once a year emissions testing.

Just my thoughts, dont use the cat unless you have to. Ill give you the reason why. When i installed my KM DP i put the test pipe on that he sent me with the DP and the hooker exhaust. The 44 spooled like mad. I then had to install the high flow cat to get the car smogged a couple of month ago. Just out of curiousity i kept the boost the same before i installed the cat and after i had the cat on. Took it down to smog busters, and on the way i floored it just to see where the boost would go and what restrictions the cat had. Well here it is with my own eyes.

23# of boost on 100 octane before the cat
19-20# of boost with the cat on and no other changes whatsoever. Dont use the cat until you have to they suck for a good air flowing car.

what i do since i have emissions testing in my county...for the street i have a hollowed out cat and then for emissions testing (once every two years here) i slap on a good cat...after testing and passing i slap the hollowed one back on...hell my car would pass emissions with straight pipes if i wanted to but i dont want to risk it...

4 psi. loss for me too through the THDP "high flow" cat.

Gonna test my random tech. one someday if they ever go back to emissions testing. I'm hoping they never do. ;)

Corrupt money making scheme it was proven to be here in CT. :(

Random techs high flow is what i ran when i lost about 4# of boost. Some high flow alright, i bet a regular cat would be the same loss of boost:rolleyes:

A restriction in the exhaust (Cat Convertor) and a turbo charger do not mix. They are fighting each other.

As I mentioned in a post above, I gutted my 'high flow' cat. However, the 90* tube that is on the outside (air tube?) extends inside the cat. Should I try to cut that out or will it not cause any problem? Thanks.

I just put a classic plate on my car so it is now emmissions exempt. Maybe you guys have a similar law in your states. I'm running a dump pipe in place of the cat.

Mine passed last may with a gutted cat on the first try without touching a thing under the hood not even a fuel pressure adjustment was made, It shocked the hell out of me I was for certain it would fail , So before you go swapping give it a try you might be surprised !!

turboman38--The requirement for antique plates in NC is 35 years!! They don't have a classic plate. :(

TEST MY 6--I have an emissions chip that I will try next time using the gutted cat. Hopefully, it will get me through emissions w/o putting on a real cat.
