I had an older thread related to performance upgrades, but I just wanted to get an updated opinion from my fellow members of on this topic.

My goal is to make my stock 87 GN faster. I would like to know what would be the 10 best performance upgrades #1 being the most important and #10 being the least important.

I would appreciate all of the input regarding my question.

Thanks

I think #1 would be rear lower control arms. That was the first thing I did to my stock GN. The car would wheel hop real bad and I could not even put the stock HP all to the ground.

Big turbo
good torque converter
good down pipe
good fuel pump and wiring
big injectors
good intercooler
sticky tires
scan tool
alcohol injection
solid MAF pipe

not necessarily in that order - sorry I typed it in my mailer and copied it before clicking on the link but it really is all about combo so it is a package type deal

somebody put some numbers to those parts considering 72 pph injectors and a 67 to 70 series turbo - wonder how much to go solid 10's or better :)

fuel pump(waldro 340), injectors(60 High Z's), exhaust, cold air kit, racing gas, scan tool, translater extender chip, adjustable fuel regulator, fuel pressure guage, adustable waste gate, good tune up, slicks 26inch and ALOT of research.

Same as above!

Also:
Fbody radiator
Power Plate

If the car is 100% stock and nothing done, here is what id do.

1. Walboro fuel pump and hotwire kit
2. 9" K&N air filter
3. 3 inch S.S. downpipe deleting the stock elbow, 3 inch test pipe
4. Hooker cat back
5. Turbotweak chip either race chip or street chip
6. Scanmaster 2.1
7. New plugs, wires, 02 sensor, clean oil out of stock IC
8. RJC boost controller
9. Trans cooler
10. Meth kit for #5.
Thats a good starting point....

You would have a good running car if you had some sticky tires with the above items, once you start making alot of power, the stock trans will need a shift kit asap.

THE most important thing that you can do to only buy parts once, make these things fly, and stay together, is gain knowledge. ;)

Good luck...

you said, in order of most important, down to least important... define important. important to you? important to speed? reliability?

overall, the first things you need to get, is a scan tool, and some aftermarket guages. all the guages on our cars are junk. get the 5 guages you need to see what shes REALLY doin. oil pressure, boost, rpms, water temp, and fuel pressure. after that? a good manual. no, not chiltons or haynes. theyre absolutely worthless. get a good one like the real deal shop manual, or if bentleys makes one, get that.
make sure its lc2 specific, not "81-87 buick regal, somerset, lesabre etc etc" cuz youll get about 2 pages that deal with the parts that are actually on our cars. after that, you need to tighten everything else up. without any mods, just the stock torque alone, is enough to A. start the tires on fire, B. crack your freakin a and b pillars, and C. start your rear end a hoppin soo bad, youll get whiplash.
you could have 550 lb/ft of torque, but if your suspension sucks, youll be going nowhere fast. like a mustang. so youll have to get all 4 frame brace kits, along with the engine tie down strap. if you try to brake boost on the line, for a good launch, im not sure i could guarantee your motor mounts to last more than about 6 minutes or so.
my normally aspirated 3.8 regal broke it mounts quite often. i couldnt imagine what a 360 lb/ft of torque 3.8 would do to them with no engine strap.... now, you got to get a good fuel pump with hotwire kit, or youll lean out too much, and start wearing things out too fast. you dont want that. then youll have to do the adjustable fuel pressure regulator. Now that you got fuel like youre supposed to, youll need a little cool air.
take that stock plastic maf pipe off, cuz they leak alot, and you dont need any unmetered air gettin in there. get a good cold air kit from tin man, with an rjc plenum plate to even the air out in there, and youll be squared away. also, a hot running turbo car, runs like crap.
throw a camaro rad in there, with a cooler thermostat, and that will be squared away as well. top it all off, with a mild street chip from mike licht, or eric marshall, and youll have quite a car that will really suprise you. So to break it all down, I guess the most important thing to get, is knowlege. get a complete manual first. if you dont know how your car works, a pt88 turbo would do not a god darn thing for you....

1.manual 2. scanmaster 3. aftermarket guage kit. 4. suspension kit. which is in the MINIMUM all 4 frame brace kits w/ engine strap. 5, good shocks with control/trailing arm bushings. 6. fuel system, which is a pump, hotwire kit, and fuel pressure regulator from full throttle (hes got the best prices right now) 7. induction. cold air kit from tin man, and rjc plenum plate. 8. cooling. f body rad with 160 t-stat 9. a good chip and 10, youll need some good tires now, cuz anything less will just go up in smoke.... With just these mods, along with the stock turbo, intercooler, injectors, and a good tune, you can take this car down to about porsche 911 times. for about a thousand dollars.... AND fit grocerys in it. No other car is as a complete package, as a turbo regal is. A thousand dollars for any other car, wouldnt get you HALF the horsepower as it would on these cars....Hell, my spark plug wires alone, for my bmw 4 cylinder costs 160 bucks....

Here is my pic's for a stock appearing car.

#1 Install ALL the available Body braces, missing body bushings & GNX bushings. These really do work, will protect your investment & give you a much more solid feeling car.

#2 160 thermostat, Fresh coolant & plug throttle body coolant lines.

#3 340 fuel pump & Hot wire kit

#4 Adjustable fuel pressure regulator

#5 K & N stock location air filter with exposed bottom half. Looks stock but a good hp increase

#6 RJC power plate, These things are amazing & really help these engine tolerate pump gas with increased boost

#7 RJC Biggie oil filter upgrade, Cheap insurance to help protect your investment

#8 Passenger valve cover breather & bypass plug. Keep that oil out of your intercooler. Remove & clean out the intercooler

#9 Remove Cat. Conv. & install Dump Pipe

#10 Purchase an up to date pump gas chip. The chip tuners have come a long way with the programs for these cars.

These basic mod's on a good running, stock car will produce mid to low 12 sec. times with traction. Good luck & enjoy your car!

Hard to say cause we dont know what your car needs. Your suspension and brakes may be worn out. You may have wiring issues, etc.
If your tranny is serviced and running well, suspension and brakes are good (very important), then I would go in this order. Some are boring, but necessary.
1. Scan Tool. Scanmaster 2.1 or whatever other people recommend.
2. Replace/Adjust as many sensors as possible and do an all around tune-up with new wires, plugs, possibly a new ignition module and coil pack, and check all grounds. Get the tune right.
3. Walbro 340 pump and hotwire kit from racetronix.
4. 160 Thermostat and Autozone F-Body radiator ($109..just get it) and external oil cooler (F-Body Rad. has no oil cooler)
5. Adjustable wastegate and RJC boost controller.
6. Sticky tires.
7. 50# or higher injectors/Extender Chip/LS1 MAF/LS1 MAF Translator (all 1 mod..they have to be done at the same time)
8. Alky injection.
9. Good 3" Downpipe.
10. A bigger turbo. Hopefully you picked injectors big enough.
11. A good wax job cause several coats of wax can drop 3 seconds of your ET.

Okay guys, sorry about not listing the upgrades that are already on my car. There may be more than I list, but I will list as much as I know. Here they are:

1. Shift Kit

2. Adjustable fuel pressure regulator

3. Kenne Bell Air Intake

4. Injectors (they have the green top)

5. 3" Downpipe (Don't know what kind, but It's not a very good quality dp though, so I'll be switching to the Terry Houston Downpipe)

6. Exhaust/w Flowmaster muffler (I'll be switching the entire exhaust system though)

7. External Fan (helps for faster cooling, I think)

That is about all that I know that the car has on it. The guy I bought it from possibly was going to be racing the car beause he has a Kenne Bell setup on the center console. The little compartment that flips up (maybe it was a cigarette compartment). There are like 7 switches that control the main fan, nitrous, and some other performance stuff. Sorry if I'm a little vague about the information that I provided, but that is the best that I can do at this point.

I also came acrossed this link on RJCracing.com

http://www.rjcracing.com/9_10_11_Sec_Perf_Receipes/9_10_11_sec_perf_receipes.html

I'm more interested in a car around the 11 sec. range. I don't think I want to do anything faster yet.

Are these receipes the real deal?

Thanks

Yeah, if you feel like running 30 pounds of boost WITH race gas AND alky. No thanks. Follow my list above and you'll have a solid 11 second car on pump gas and no more than 25psi. I forgot to add that the next thing on that list after turbo should be a better intercooler. You dont need anything exotic. A Duttweiler neck can do plenty if you have a good turbo. Next on the list would be a good torque converter. The right converter can make a WORLD of difference. If you're not worried about mileage and converter lockup, I highly recommend the Art Carr 16930 non lock. Felt like I lost a substantial amount of power when I switched back to the stock TC.

This is how I gained a whole 1 1/2 second on one of my tamed GNs. Times went from 13.2 to consistent 11.7 to 11.8 quarter mile runs. All stock internals.

1. Bigger Turbo

2. Bigger Injectors

3. Chip

4. Bigger Intercooler

5. Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator

6. Performance Shocks

7. Right Rear Air Bag

8. 3" Down Pipe

9. 3" Custom Exhaust

10. Scanmaster (Must)

These upgrades worked for me and those racers who were use to seeing me run low 13.0s (Bone Stock) were amazed to see the car in just weeks cut nearly 2 whole seconds off the time.

Hey Jack...is that last set of dollar signs what you can sell the car for... :frown:

Here's my list (in order) from my experiences and others:

1. Scanmaster
2. TurboTweak chip (can adjust between street and race settings)
3. boost gauge (stock dash gauge not accurate)
4. adjustable fuel pressure regulator and fuel rail mounted fuel pressure gauge
- adjustable wastegate mod (practically free)
5. 160 thermostat
6. 9" cone K&N air filter and solid MAF pipe
7. test pipe with dump to replace cat
8. Walbro fuel pump and hotwire kit
9. air bags
10. injectors
- converter lockup switch (practically free)

Might be good for low 13's with the converter locked, maybe even crack a high 12 with luck and a good launch on street tires.

11. sticky tires such as MT drag radials
12. cheap 3" downpipe using stock elbow
13. dutt neck for stock intercooler
14. RJC boost controller
15. RJC powerplate

These five things will help the launch and add some power to get the car deep into the 12s.

When you're ready to race, put in a half tank of 116, unplug the O2 sensor (TurboTweak chip don't need it, plug it back in after running through a tank of unleaded), up the boost, add timing and fuel to the TurboTweak chip, and you're ready to go.

By this time you'll probably need a trans, converter, rear end, suspension mods, and other higher $ things. So you might as well upgrade the turbo (and injectors, if needed), add an alky kit and make it an 11 sec car. :)
