My run around car, 1996 Saab 9000 turbo, had the power steering pump go out in my driveway two weeks ago. At first I thought it was the high pressure line so I replaced that. Then I realized it was the pump so I replaced that too (actually 2x because the first reman I got leaked just as bad). Now I have no leaks. However the rack groans, the pump has a little rattle and the fluid is very foamy. I let it sit on stands last night and cranked the wheel left to right and let it sit for long periods of time to allow bubbles to work out through the reservior.
This morning it felt a little better. Took it for a ride and it still had the symptoms but improved. I shut it down and then heard a hiss from the feed hose so I figured this is where the air is getting into the system and causing the foam. Replaced it with a nice piece of hose and refilled. No difference and maybe a bit worse. The steering is groaning and grabby. I cannot find any leaks. I know the o-rings on the pressure hoses were good and not pinched. Again there are no leaks.
I just about can't stand it anymore. Two weeks of ordering parts, installing and returning them. These are not on-the-shelf parts so it's a pain every time. Anyone who has an idea I welcome it. I am probably going to get some Lucas Power Steering Fix and try that tomorrow. Fluid is a killer too - $4.25/qt and it goes quick. This started suddenly - it drove great the day before the pump leaked all over the place and all I did was back up after washing it.
