My run around car, 1996 Saab 9000 turbo, had the power steering pump go out in my driveway two weeks ago. At first I thought it was the high pressure line so I replaced that. Then I realized it was the pump so I replaced that too (actually 2x because the first reman I got leaked just as bad). Now I have no leaks. However the rack groans, the pump has a little rattle and the fluid is very foamy. I let it sit on stands last night and cranked the wheel left to right and let it sit for long periods of time to allow bubbles to work out through the reservior.

This morning it felt a little better. Took it for a ride and it still had the symptoms but improved. I shut it down and then heard a hiss from the feed hose so I figured this is where the air is getting into the system and causing the foam. Replaced it with a nice piece of hose and refilled. No difference and maybe a bit worse. The steering is groaning and grabby. I cannot find any leaks. I know the o-rings on the pressure hoses were good and not pinched. Again there are no leaks.

I just about can't stand it anymore. Two weeks of ordering parts, installing and returning them. These are not on-the-shelf parts so it's a pain every time. Anyone who has an idea I welcome it. I am probably going to get some Lucas Power Steering Fix and try that tomorrow. Fluid is a killer too - $4.25/qt and it goes quick. This started suddenly - it drove great the day before the pump leaked all over the place and all I did was back up after washing it.

It's misspelled John. It should be sob when you start buying parts for them.:p You can get a filter for the return line and it will trap most of the crap in it. I had a similar issue with a Chrysler mini van years ago and had to replace a bunch of parts before it was good.;)

Did you turn wheel lock to lock at least 20 times with car off before starting? I would find a tech with a air lift and see if that gets air out of the system. It sounds like the pump is cavitating .

I will lift it and work out some more bubbles. That is probably it. I just can't see anything else it could be. I have no experience with R&P. Thanks for the idea.

**Just tried it, both front wheels off ground, engine off, worked steering lock to lock left and right 30 times (just to be sure). I removed the PS reservior cap and watched it through the hood gap. Saw several eruptions of fluid jump up while turning, indicating that air is escaping. Put cap back on, started car, much better ease in turning. Removed cap again and fluid was virtually foam free. Did another long session of turning with cap off and only got a couple of small fluid jumps. Started and after checking reservior, it is again foam free. I think it will be ok but a road test will confirm.

Thanks for the input - I was ready to junk this pig. Two weeks of waiting on parts and frustration and little info even on my favorite Saab site. This is the best board on the web IMO. Thanks again!
