Tough Riddle!

I love riddles and came across a mother load of them recently....can post more if you interested too....onto the riddle

Rules:
-If you know the answer already then don't ruin it for everyone
-Google is cheating! Ruins the fun
-I will post clues every day or until someone gets it, or someone who's figured it out can jump in with clues too if they choos to.


The mother is 21 years older than the child. In 6 years from now, the mother will be 5 times as old as the child.
Question: Where's the father?

How's about another?

At a fork in the road between two cities, you see 2 people. One always tells the truth, and comes from the city of safety. The other person always lies and comes from the city of cannibals, where they will eat you. They both look exactly the same. You must choose one of the persons, and ask him one and only one question (no compound questions either, such as "is this shirt red and which way to safety?"). What question could you ask to find out which path leads to the city of safety?

Or does it have to be a yes/no question?
If so, how about is 2+2 = 4?

The lieing villager would lie and point to the other village and the safety villager would obvously point to his village.

It doesn't have to be a yes no question.

Asking them 2+2 will discover who is the liar but then you're out of questions to ask and have gotten no where.

TT/Amesap: Nice attempt but whos to say that the liar has to point to the other village? Technically he has the option to point in any direction (other than the correct one) he pleases. For example he could point straight up or and your shoes.

As either one "Which fork in the road leads to your village?" Ask the lier and he points to safety. Ask the truth-teller and he points to safety.

I guess I misunderstood the question. They aren't necessarily standing by their respective road.. Oops...

I think you misunderstand the term "fork in the road" The "fork" is the split, the road splits into two roads. Asking them which "fork" will not get you anywhere.

If you think you're sure u know the answer PM me i suppose and I'll verify.

I must say that the answers submitted have made me re-think the "correct" answer since it is different from what is considered to be "correct" but there is still flaws in your answers submitted. Keep trying, though.

I know the answer. I tell the riddle a little different but same concept and pretty much the same answer. Probably the toughest riddle that I know. Even when I tell people the answer, it takes about another 10 to 15 minutes for them to understand it and even still they question it. I usually have to re-enact it so they can actually "see" the answer happen.

ok "Which leg of the fork" or "which of these two roads" or "point to either roads at the fork and ask either one if it leads to thier city" or " does the road on the right lead to your city" You seem to poking holes at the symantics of the wording rather than the logic of the question. Please PM your answer.

yeah i dont get why a question like

"which of these 2 paths will lead me to your city?" wouldnt suffice....

The answer goes along these lines....after reading it you'll understand

You simply ask him:

"What will the other guy tell me if I ask him if this path goes to the city of safety (point to a path)"

If you are pointing to the City of Safety:

1) You talk to the Truth Teller, he will say No because he knows the other guy will lie and say No.

2) You talk to the Liar, he will say No because he knows the other guy will say Yes, but he is a liar so he will lie about that and say No.

If you are pointing to the City of Cannibals

1) You talk to the truth teller, he will say Yes because he knows the other guy will lie and say Yes this is the City of Safety

2) You talk to the liar, he will say Yes because he knows the other guy will say No this is not the path to the city of safety, so he has to lie and say Yes.

If he says No, you are pointing to the city of safety.



There is another way, similar to asking what your brother would have answered. That is:
"What direction would you have told me to travel to reach village of safety, if I had asked you yesterday?"

Then, go in the direction they point. The honest brother will tell you truthfully that he would have directed you to safety. The prevaricating brother will have to lie about how he would have answered the previous day (thus tell the truth).
