Towing a car with Automatic Tranmission?

Will towing a car without the motor running damage the automatic transmission. I need to tow my car 2-3 miles and it won't start.

I had a friend tow me over to a shop once, about the same distance, and there wasn't any adverse effects.

go slow, it will be fine, but i wouldnt go more than a few miles

Any further I would drop the driveshaft.
