Ok so after coming home from the mall I am heading home off the freeway after dropping the girlfriend off. So the trans acts funny ,kinda slips and shutters slightly while pulling away from the light. At the next light I go to go and it just slips while barely catching. When I get hom the culprit is the hose to the tranny cooler has worked it's way almost all the way off (clamp was stripped out apparently) and fluid is everywhere. The dipstick shows nothing. I wash it off and call it a night until I can work on it.
Today I replace the clamp and tighten the hoses. I fill it with 5 qts of fluid and it still does not register anything on the dip stick. It does however move without problem. It does slip a little between shifts and the shifts are soft. It has a shift kit and stock pan and converter with a trans cooler.
I am guessing that maybe the torque converter emptied itself, does this sound feasible? If so how do I go about refilling it, do I have to drop the trans? I imagine so. Seeing as how it seems to be fairly ok now I hope that filling it properly would help alleviate the problem.
Any advice or words of wisdom, Wise Ones?

Yes the converter could have and most likely did empty, if you lost that much fluid. It will fill on it's own while eng. is running, just keep adding 'til your on the full mark again that's it.

Thanks. I just took it out again to the car wash to do a thoruogh scrubbibng of eveything (pretty sure that trans fluid isn't the best on new paint) and it is coming back to life slowly. It is shifting a little better and harder. So I am off to work now in the 72 Monte. I am going to leave the Cutlass parked and drive and fill it gradually.
Thanks again for the quick reply, I feel a little better now.
:)

How much fluid would I have to use to fill this thing completely if it were bone dry (including converter)? So far I have 6 qts in it and it is not registering at all on the stick. Any help appreciated as I don't want to make anything worse by overfilling. I did a search but only came up with something about 12 qts. Does this sound right?
Cutlass still parked rolling poor classic 72 in the rain.

Thanks for all your help! The car ended up using about 8 qts total and seems to be shifting fine and running fine. Now I can get the Monte Carlo out of the rain. :)
Hopefully the life expectancy hasn't been shortened too much as I am sure I took off some time.
