Hi

I haven't posted here for a long time. You guys have been very helpful with some of my questions about the 200-4r, but now I'm hoping I can borrow some of your knowledge on the TH350 :)

I'm in the process of doing a rebuild of a friend's TH350, from his 1980 vette. It's become apparent that this box may not have originally been fitted to the vette, as I understand that the original box should have had part of the vette's VIN stamped on the case, which this one doesn't.

So I'm left trying to identify it from other markings, of which I can't find many! I've read that the possible places for ID numbers would be stamped into the sump pan or the governor body, but there's no sign of anything in either of those places. I'm guessing the pan or the gov cover are not original.
So, are there any other markings to look for? I guess at least some casting numbers might tell me how old the unit is, if not what vehicle it was originally built for.

I still need to look over the Valve body for markings, I'm hopeful of finding something there.

Thanks in advance

I always thought alot of the GM autos were stamped on the pan rail just above the tranny pan.... on the vertical section where the bolts go through.... which can be seen with tranny in car... and pan still installed... last digits are supposed to match last digits of VIN....

Sorry... this is the extent of the knowledge I have on this topic....

Thanks for the responses guys.

Yeah, I've checked all those places you suggest and in that link, and come up blank. This one's really a headscratcher.

I know that Chevy and Buick put ID marks on the sump pan and Governor cover, and since I'm sure this one's got an aftermarket sump then that would explain the lack of marks there.

But I understand the Vehicle VIN should be stamped on the case somewhere too?
The pics below show the lack of marks in the "normal" VIN places
1) Pad on Right hand bellhousing flange - nothing
2) Above pan rail on manual lever side - nothing
And neither place look like the numbers have been ground off, just as though they were never put there in the first place.

Then there's these unexpected numbers on the front face of the bell housing flange - third pic. Any ideas what these are?

The casting number in the fourth pic, I'm guessing this might point to 1970 (the numbers to the right)

Apart from that and some other undecipherable casting codes, there's absolutely nothing on this box?
