Tranny maintenance...things to check while pan is off?

I'll be dropping the pan on my '87 GN 2004R next week to change fluid and check things out. Are there some things I can check or replace while I'm in there? I'm planning to install a drain plug, though, in case I need to drop the pan a few more times to get everything straightened out.
I'm very new to automatic tranny work and have at least one shifting problem with my car, so I want to try a little troubleshooting and maintenance before I call in the pros.

Not much you can really do but ck the spring in the 1-2 acc and service trans with new filter , gasket, and fluid. good Luck.. Bt
