Ok Guys I ned some help on this one.

As you all know by now I have an 83 Regal with a the 305 from my Chevy Caprice I totalled a while ago. The Caprice had a 700R4 tranny in it that worked and shifted great ( only 49,000 miles) Well I made the motor swap to the Regal and decided to go with a TH350 tranny because it was easier to install than the 700R4. I traded my friend the 700 for the 350, and had the 350 rebuilt.

Well after driving the car for a few months I am not happy with the performance, it shifts real firm but the Caprice was faster. The motor got a new Edelbrock Performer intake, 500cfm carb, rollers, headers but with the gear ratio different it's a dog.

Does anyone know what it would take to put the 700r4 in the Regal? I know the drive shaft has to shortened and that the 700's are very fussy about vaccuum.

This would probably be a winter project so time is not an issue, I just want to research this more and find out whats best. I jst think having the 4 speed ( like you guys in the GN's) would be great for cruising on the highway as oppused to putting in a bigger gear in the rear end.

I'm open for comments and suggestions.....

thanks for the link, I read this one a couple months back.

keep the thoughts comin..

I'm going to say...

since you already traded off the 700-R4, get a 200-4R. It'll be more of a direct bolt-in because the driveshaft won't require alteration; it's the same length as the TH-350.

200r4

yes thats another option. the thing is I can get the 700 back for practically nothing, unlike what it's gonna cost me to find a descent 200r4. Whats about the mount for a 200r4? is that the same as a 350??

You will still have to lay out money to have the driveshaft shortened on the 700. I agree with the others, I would use a 2004r

I bought my GN with a toasted 2004r and since Im use to 700's I put one in the GN. I found that there two, maybe three different tailshafts on the 700. Get one that has a mounting pad just behind the speedo hump-most dont have the mounting pad. Using this tailhousing, I was able to bolt in stock crossmember
and use 3 out of 4 frame holes. Just got 1 bolt in one side of c member. A driveshaft from what a guy said was from a 78 Camaro worked PERFECTLY. Know to set TV at maximum or youll fry the picky 700. Probably have to experiment with governer springs to make shift timing correct too.
Gd luck:eek:
