Is there supposed be up and down and side to side movement on the shaft that sticks out of the rear of the tranny ? With my drive shaft installed I have about a 1/6 of an inch of play on the yoke, tranny side.Is this normal ? I just replaced the U-joints in the drive shaft and also the tranny seal. The tranny seal I bought from NAPA was a little different, the new one has a lip on it and was installed with the spring on the seal going inward. The old one had no lip and was installed with the spring on the seal going outward. When I showed the parts guy the old seal he insisted that someone installed the wrong seal and that his was right.I confirmed this with another auto parts store. To me it seems like a lot of play, but I am no expert.I get a vibration at about 60-65 miles an hour.Thanks,ikle.

The original GM seal did not have a lip on it. A little side play is normal but 1/16" may be a little excessive. Without the driveshaft installed a lot of side play in the output shaft is normal.

Thanks Mike, correct me if I am wrong, the reason for the tranny seal on the rear of the tranny is to keep the fluid in and dirt out and has nothing to do with helping control side to side play correct ? So if I had the wrong seal it would be a sealing issue not a excessive play issue right.Thanks,ikle.

Correct. If you have too much side play it's either the tail bushing is worn, the driveshaft yolk is worn or both.
