I can't believe it has been almost 3 months since I wanted to take out the trans and check it out....darn cold and snow up here in MN never quits! Anyway, I got the trans out finally last night and here is what I found...It has a torque convertor in it that was remanufactured for GM(sticker said) and when I stick my fingers inside it to move the splined teeth I am not abe to turn them in either direction. I know that they should turn because I have another convertor out of my basket case that I can move the splines easily one way(clock wise) but it is harder to turn them CCW. Also, I noticed that there is a ring/thick washer inside the snout that is half broken off...where the other half is who knows!

I am wondering, do I just put in another convertor or open up the trans also, or put in a turbo 350 that I know is good? BTW, the trans acted like this...it felt like it wanted to move if I gave it a lot of gas, didn't dare drive it though, and before starting it, I checked the fluid level, it was over the full mark, but when I started it , the level did not go down like it should have, which would tell me that the pump wasn't working.....Would the bad convertor make it not pump fluid? I wouldn't think so because the tangs on the TC drive the pump gears.
Any ideas please? Thanks!

Sounds like it will need to come apart, at least the Pump.
Converter sounds like the Stator is toast.

Any Pics of the Ring/Washer?
Possibly part of the Stator.

I wouldn't be able to get a pic inside the TC because even though I hae been trying to empty it of fluid, when I lay it back down it comes back and cover the broken ring/washer. I just got a convertor from a member and am going to try that first. I probably won't get to it today because it is raining cats and dogs here as usual.....why is it that we can't get 2 decent days in a row!

update

Everybody must be enjoying the nice weather which would be anywhere than here in MN! It was raining all day until 3pm then we got some sun for about 2 hours, now we got rain and hail and tornado warnings! I can't win!

Anyway, I got the convertor I picked up today installed, and the trans bolted up about 8:15pm. I know I am taking a chance on the pump being good but I spun the torque convertor after I put it into the trans and fluid came out the top cooling line on the side of the trans so I figure the pumps gotta be working if fluid came out. Right? Tomorrow I will put in the x-member and the exhaust back on and see what I got....wish me luck guys!

Best to go through the trans and check it out if a convertor goes out. It sux but best.

If you're not going to check the Trans & Pump out at least drop the Pan & check for metal, also look in the Filter. A bad TC can fill a Trans with metal. :frown:

I did see some filings in the fluid from the torque convertor and I do plan on changing the filter before starting it, thanks for suggestions!

I would strongly suggest you getting a PSI gauge and testing the psi before driving it. One or two smal gouges in the pump can kill its ability to make good psi therefore smoking the trans.

update

I got everything bolted back up yesterday and backed her out of the garage at 3:00pm. I checked the fluid after putting in 8 quarts and it was still low so I put in another quart. Backed out of the driveway, put the brakes on, pedal went to the floor! Checked under the car, a rusty brake line broke. So now this morning I'm gonna check and see what it will take to replace it. Anyway, the trans moves the car, unlike before when it didn't! Update later. Hope the rain holds off for a while!

Okay, so I got that rusty line replaced about 3pm wednesday, took it for a ride,it ran so-so, taking off from a stop it goes okay but when I try to give it more that half the pedal down it starts to stumble likes it wants to kill, so I let off and give it gas again and it might go! Although a couple of times I floored it and it took off! Got back home, another rusty steel brake line broke! I couldn't work on it thursday, it was my birthday! Fixed the line today(friday) but something is going on with the hydro boost, it keeps blowing brake fluid out of the cover when I turn the key on and here it pumping. Can't figure out how it works...looks like it pumps fluid out of the right side of the reservoir into who know where, then if I pump the brakes to bleed it the pedal is soft again! Any ideas or should I post in a different thread?

Last update!

I got it figured out why the car was falling flat on it's face from a standstill....the MAF was bad! I replaced that with one off of the totaled G/N, and bought a new air filter and it runs like a top now! Just hope I can keep her at the speed limit...it wants to go fast!
