trans or converter?

Guys I got a problem my 85 gn won't go in reverse so I thought its the tranny then I put in reverse an tried to push it it won't move its like its in park this all happened when I'm getting the new fresh 87 motor an ic installed a friend said it could be the converter so any help or ideas? Thanks guys

has it always done this?
do all other gears work properly? and in the correct shifter position..?
i had a stretched cable one time, and it would skip rev. when it finally released from park..
try disconnecting linkage from trans and shift it manually from under car.

All the gears work properly it was fine I drove it off the trailer but I have had some problems with the cble or the linkage sometimes in park it won't let the key out of ignition unless I go from drive to park wit a little force

I forget what it is called but there is a rod that connects the linkage on the tranny to the steering column rotating collar(even if you have a column shift car). There is a nut on there you can tighten and loosen to move it up and down for adjustment. Might want to try moving that up and down. Dont slam the shifter or you will be replacing that soon.

does the car try to drive in Neutral?
