My dad owns an 87 GN not too sure about whats done, but he is freinds with Fred Vetter formerly from Dynotech Performance. (they both live close to each other) Fred did alot of the work on the car including a new motor etc and the trans was done by Eric Shertz who now owns Dynotech. He was at a stop and slowly gets into it, shifts into 2nd and all of the sudden the car freewheels like it was put in neutral. There were no bangs or pops or anything, just like it went into neutral. He has no gears whatsoever now, but he isnt sure if he has park or not, he is going to check to see if he does. He remembers hearing earlier that day when he parked the car what sounded almost like a cracked header coming from the engine and trans area. Anyone have any suggestions on what it might be?? he is getting the car towed now and wont be able to have it looked at till monday. Any help would be appreciated guys, thanks alot!

My bet would be pump rotor/slide from what to describe. Get a pressure check for starters, my guess is you won't have any though if that is what it is. Hopefully if that's it no other damage was done other than to the pump. Let us know what ya find?

thanks, Ill have him check that out as well. Any other suggestions from anyone?? :)

Really he needs to check pressure first!!! If it don't have any then problem solved. This is a tell tale sign of what I suggested...

"He remembers hearing earlier that day when he parked the car what sounded almost like a cracked header coming from the engine and trans area. "

That is the sound of a split rotor and or slide just before it splits in two. Pressure check is the easiest and quickest way to start. If there is no pressure it's the pump or possibly and doubtfully the filter/pickup came out or broke. Other than those two things w/o it making any noise when it went out I doubt the input or fwd. drum shafts broke but those are the only other two things I would suggest, but get the pressure checked!

culd be the pump disconnect a cooler line and check for oil flow .if you have it youmay have broke the input shaft or forward drum. rotational torque cannot be applied to the planetary gewrs without these 2 items .ckperformance.com

Do you mean the pump in the torque convertor or internally in the transmission?

Fred Vetter seems to feel its the pump in the torque convertor. Its an orange stripe street brawler 12 inch 3000 stall speed torque convertor

Trans pump, a simple pressure test will tell or like Chris said check the flow from cooler line if you don't have a gauge. There is nothing more anyone can tell you 'til you find out if it has pressure or not.

OK! now for the R&R most likely your gonna need a whole new pump assembly, also check converter hub real well for damage. :(

Ok, we will check for that next, were bringing it in for someone to look at. Ill keep ya posted, thanks for your help with this.

Well, problem solved and fixed. We got a whole new pump assembly installed gaskets and everything were all done as well. The torque convertor shaft was also damaged so that was replaced as well. Car runs great now!! HOTTOGO, thanks for all your help in this, you were exatly right! Chris718, thanks a bunch to you as well! :)

Glad to hear it all worked out OK...

unfortunately this is a somewhat common problem, glad to have helped out. :D
