Alright guys, I was wondering if any of you run an actual tranny pressure gauge in the car. Not the big hand helds for testing but a 2 1/16th gauge you can put in a pod inside the car like a boost or oil pressure gauge. Reason I ask is I bought a NOS Stewart Warner Trans PSI gauge off Ebay, looks just like the OE GNX gauges. It reads to 400 psi and is mechanical. I was hoping some how to install this in the car to be able to monitor the trans pressure like I do oil psi and other critical things. What type of line should I use to install to the gauge from the tranny? My tranny pressures should be upwards of 280psi max or so. Tranny is down for a rebuild right now but will be going back together by next weekend I hope :)

So what do you think? What would be the best line to use to hold up to the pressure? Have any of you done this before? I know the gauge may not be as accurate as the big hand helds ( I have one of those too BTW ) but it sure would be nice to be able to see the pressures on a dailey basis and keep tabs of the line pressure's health.

I just wouldn't like the thought of 280 psi of hot fluid sitting in my car. I got a mechanical oil press gauge, but 80 psi is a lot less than 280....

It's just my own .02, but I would only be installing a permanent trans pressure gauge if it was with an electric sender. I am sure people will disagree with me, I just like to lean towards the side of safety on some things. Would hate to see the results of 280 psi of hot oil spraying all over the inside of a car.

I didn't know a small permanemt trans PSI gauge such as that even existed. Trans pressure is the kind of thing you check when you install it, and pretty much forget about unless it starts acting up. It shouldn't need to be constantly monitored. Of course, if you have the gauge, and you have a place to put it, i'm not one to tell someone that they shouldn't do it. 300 PSI of hot trans fluid would not be a good thing if it broke a line inside the car. I was reading a story on a trans mailing list awhile back about a ford probe with runaway line pressure. It blew the pressure gauge apart while the guy was holding it inside the car and completely ruined the interior. The trans shop had to buy the car. I don't think the guy was hurt but it would be possible at that pressure. I'm thinking braided steel line if you decide to do it.

Just my opinion.

Yeah, I know that a failure could be aweful. But surely someone has done it. The line would have to be bullit proof. Here 's a pic of the gauge .

Stainless steel teflon lined hose.

Just like whats used on nitrous lines. A -4 would be fine.

It has an operating temp of up to 450 DF, burst is 1500 PSI

Thank you so much!!! :)

donnie. another idea is to install the gauge in the pressure side of the cooler line's. this is the pressure to watch to make sure you dont wipe out your thrust bearing. i look at this pressure as well as line pressure on all buick trans.
