are transmission upgrades things that can be done at home or do you need specialized tools thaty only a shop has access to?

Depends on how creative you are...

tools are definately helpful, but an absoulute must, not really. If you run across something like a bushing that needs replaced or a clutch pack you can't get apart, you cn take them indivdual items to a shop and let them do it. Check out this article for a rebuild on a buget for some idea's.
