don't get me wrong I love my 6.0 psd. (if you don't stroke it put it away) I wouldn't trade it for anything except 1 truck, & that would be the one I traded it in for, a 93 factory turbo idi. I put a Banks turbo on it, it had 35" tires with 6" of lift. I had that truck buried to it's inspection sticker in the mud, & then would take it on a 1k mile trip & think nothing of it, 16mpg no matter how I drove it, towing, city, highway.

"don't get me wrong I love my 6.0 psd. (if you don't stroke it put it away)"

I saw a sticker on a Cummins that read "I'd Rather Be Cummin, Than Strokin'"

Dont rule out the Duramax

I would take a real long look at the Duramax Trucks. My good buddy Ralph has had Dodge, Ford and Duramax over the last 5 years. He had all the upgrades to each of them and he swears that wishes he had bought the Duramax in the first place. I know my other friends' (Tony)GMC duramax truck runs like a scalded dog. Thats the truck that I spun a bearing to tryin to catch in a street race. Ive heard those trucks have made very low 13.sec passes and I think I read in a response to a post that there are 12 second duramaxes out there . One more thing and Im not tryin to start trouble but to me the interior on the new Fords is kind of cheap looking---very importy! Good luck with whatever u buy.

I really like the allison, but I won't buy a GM product for a variety of reasons, and in this specific case the only thing really going for this truck is the tranny.

Durajap!! Never

I have been biting my tongue on this, but I guess I will throw in my .02.

I have an 01 Dodge diesel, dually. I use this thing commercially to tow boats, cars, rv's you name it that is what I do. But most of the time I haul a 3 car trailer grossing about 24-26k. I start the truck up at 7 in the morning and dont shut it down til about 10 at night. In 6 months I have put about 60k miles on it.

At 45k I put in the edge comp box and turned it to level 3. I have to be honest and say that I got addicted to the extra power and abused it a little.

Now for the problems. At 60k I put in a tranny. 65k I put in a lift pump. Other than that the truck has been problem free. Anyone will tell you that the tranny and lift pump are the first things to go in these trucks. I have towed a lot of things with my truck, especially a lot of ford PSD due to Ford buying a lot of them back before the owner claims lemon law.
To be honest I love the way it has performed and my next truck will be an 04 or newer dodge due to the fact the lift pump and tranny's have been redesigned.

If you are planning on doing any mods you have to address the tranny in whatever you get. They are great for stock power but with any mods you will easily gain 150-300 lbs of torque. They are just not built for that type of power. I have driven both the PSD and the Dodge with the edge in them and honestly the dodge has more torque and the ford has more hp.

Now for longevity either motor will last. My back-up truck is a 94 Ford with the PSD and it has about 380k on the clock and it runs fine.

If I was in your shoes and not using it to pull I would buy whatever truck you like as far as looks, remember you have to drive it so be happy with it.

Sorry for not addressing the Duramax but I have no real experience with them and dont see a lot of people using them commercially, which to me says something.

I am, BTW, I didn't see anything in there about the PowerStroke (which is what I drive if you'd noticed my sig). I couldn't care less about what happens in the future to Cummins (don't have, nor will I own one), and as far as what Ford cars are doing in China is of even less interest.

It's becoming more and more difficult to buy purely American these days, but I can still try and choose to do so as much as possible.

Trust me, I've done my research. Years worth. Make no mistake, I am still a GM guy through and through. However, and as a result of the research that I've done over the last 7-8 years, there's really only one brand of truck I'll buy.
That being said, I'm quite sure you could care less, so we won't get into any discussions and endless arguements about which truck is best. It's up to a buyer's discression. But there are many reason's why I wont buy a GM truck, the Duramax is only one small part of it.
So let's let is lay.

Just a little fuel for the fire. By the year 2008 Ford's will have Cummins power and Dodge will be running Mercedes, so Ford guys may want to think about a Cummins in the future.

I get about 650 miles to the tank on my 00 Dodge Cummins 5 spd.Only mods are 4" ss dp back exhaust and FASS system(lift pump took a crap at 178k)

Weve got a 94 Dodge Cummins with over 1 million miles with nothing but routine maintenece.

seeing how im a master diesel tech at a Ford Dealership and drive a Dodge Cummins.. go ahead and make your decison.

173K miles and still rattling along....lol. 2001 Dodge 2500 Quad cab...24V Cummins/5 speed. Only mods so far are a BullyDog 4" turbo-back exhaust and Baldwin open filter. I just drove the truck from home in GA to Hammond, IN.....averaged 22 mpg cruising at 67-70 mph. Dang truck is getting better mileage than my T, and that's bad...lol. Once I get done here in Hammond and head home, will be time to address a few small issues then turn up the power more with an Edge Comp box. So far the ol blue beast hasn't given me a bit of trouble.....just keeps rumbling/rattling along....

Hey Dave, which ford engine do you prefer, the 7.3 or the 6.0?

I have no experience with the 6.0 and don't know anyone personally that has one. All I know is my 7.3 has been a gem.
8,000# of truck, room for 8 plus all their luggage and get an easy 20mpg on the highway to boot.
Wonderfull tower too, 14mpg while pulling my trailer "FULL" of household effects.

although i did over 400k miles out of my 7.3 with no problems

the 6.0 is a flop and is going away in 2007 when the twin turbo 6.4 comes out

What ever you purchase, buy it used and save yourself alot of money.

I purchased my 2002 H.O. dodge brand new for 32,300 sticker was 39,999 and it "might" be worth 23,000 now with only 36,000 miles. I purchased it for life and wont ever sell it because its everything ive ever wanted in a truck, sucks to loose so much money in just a few years, at least its paid for.
Its engine is loud and fairly cheap to repair if need be.

If you purchase a used 2002 and older dodge, do NOT get a automatic, they will not last with any type of upgrades to the engine, and are expensive to rebuild. The 2001 dodges only have a 7/70 warranty, 2002 has a 7/100 warranty.
If you get a 2003 and newer dodge, make sure it has the H.O. engine with the better automatic transmission 48e? 6 speed standard was new in 2002 or 2001 for the H.O. trucks.

Chevy and Ford have very expensive injectors, my work spent 3500.00 with labor for new ford injectors in my 1999 f-450, and i know a guy with a 2001 chevy that spent over 2500.00 with labor and sued GM for his injectors to be replaced.
6 New 40+ H.P. dodge injectors for the 98.5 to 2002 can be purchased on ebay for 275.00 brand new for all 6 bosch injectors 275RV injectors.

Each ford injector is 180.00 to 250.00, and those arent upgraded injectors either.

If you have done injectors on a buick, its not too much tougher to do them on a dodge 24V pre 2003, just dont get scared :) ...

I like what someone else said here, Lift the hood of all 3 vehicles, find out which one is easiest to work on "IF NEED BE" and purchase that one.

If you are serious about getting a DIESEL, remember the dodges and fords take about 12-13 QUARTS of oil per oil change, plus filters.
Rotella low soot diesel oil is 10.00 a gallon thats 30.00-35.00 plus 7.00-15.00 for the Oil filter-
Dodge fuel filters are 8.00-15.00 and fords are 20.00-23.00

At a minimum your looking at 45.00 to 75.00 per oil change, that adds up pretty quick depending on how many miles you drive per year, i drive a turbobuick daily and tow once a month with either truck.

I also have a 1999 7.3 ford powerstroke, thats a very complicated motor with way too many sensors on it for a diesel. Once the 7.3 blows to pieces, its getting a inline 6 5.9 diesel

All 3 trucks, chevy dodge and ford all have their good and bad points, chevy has the best interior, dodge has the best driveline, and ford has the biggest interior avail before this new dodge with the extra room

Pre 2002 dodge back seats are small, chevy has a crappy fuel system and had to warranty the injectors to 250,000 miles, and ford has a weak 6.0 and the 7.3 is riddled with issues.

Go to all the diesel sites and find out what problems each truck is having before you decide to purchase any of them, you need to know what your getting into
