Anyone thought about building a true digital dash? Rather than physical gauges, write a software application that has its own dials etc, is totally customizable by its customers who can write code? Think, what if an iPad quality screen was mounted sideways in my dash to replace everything, including the idiot lights? It could also be touchscreen to do stuff like trip meters and recall on any gauge and maybe even show a graph of the last run. This way you wouldn't need a laptop to view a log. And if you didn't want to sit in the car, it would be wifi enabled to broadcast the realtime data to another iPad or laptop application if you wanted to sit in the stands and watch as a spectator, tuner, crew chief etc... My Corvette and Suburban have DIC's to show extra info, it would be cool to have even more info if desired up front rather than one extra piece of info at a time.
How hard would it be to tap into the sensor feed wires directly off the wiring harness and convert them into a single/multi USB input device for a standalone mobile PC mounted in the car under a seat or in the trunk? Since this would just be for information display, it would not affect the ability of the car to be driven other than not knowing your speed. Crazy?
