Gary,
Jeff wasn't that hard on your car was he? He power jacked mine just a little and the ground was wet, but he didn't beat on it. He just babied it around. Your's should get into print as well, but it will be some time just like mine will especially after featuring that wonderful GNX.
------------------------------------------
It was not that he ws that hard on the car or not, it was the manner in which he got on the throttle and got off of it 3 or 4 times in rapid succession.
That is very hard on the turbo cars. Getting in and staying on, unless it overbosts, is probably not as hard on these cars as getting on and off in quick succession. That's what I heard later and I have heard it often enough that I believe it. My car still had the original rear main seal in it at the time of the photoshoot and had 12K miles on it. I know that you will state as rebuttal that yours did not leak, but I would bet that at 56K or so miles on your when I looked at it, and it was not leaking at that time that the seal had already been replaced. And you yourselt told me a while that they had 2.5 years to publish the shoot, hasn't it been closer to 3 years already. And when you and I corresponded by e-mail or via thread regarding the cars appearing in an upcoming issue, and you suggested that I contact jeff, I did via e-mail, and he contradicted your or any knowledge of the east coast publishers looking for a tta to shoot, and he contradicted your or any acknowledgement of an upcoming Feb issue with some turbo cars in it. He advised me that he knew nothing of any of that, but that he would check on it and get back with me, and he never did. I did talk to several people that owned cars at the Donut Derelicts gathering regarding photo shoots by magazines, not necessarily Hemmings, but any of the auto publications, and several advised that they had had gone through the photo shoots, but their cars never made it to publication. These were not Hemmings shoots to my knowledge. I am looking forward to seeing yours in publication. Good luck with the replacement car, also. I do not hold it against Jeff about the car not getting published, but he could have been a little more up front, I felt, regarding my queries about whetther or not Hemmings was looking for a tta, and about the upcoming Feb turbo issue. It would have been much easier for him to say, and me to hear, after 2.5 years, that "It is doubtful that your car will ever go to print"

pontiac69fb: No problem! Glad you enjoyed it! :) Make sure you run out and get a copy as well!

Gary and Aaron: As far as driving my car I was very lucky to have Frank there. Frank and his son stayed in my car the whole time. So they knew they had the evil eye on them sitting in the passenger seat as far as beating on it when we played car swap :D George from Hemmings wanted to save mine for last. There was like a half hour/ 45 min. ride back to Todd's house from the shoot location. He was easy on it. I had to tell him a few times to get into it. I had Todd in his GNX in front of us so I told him don't let that car get away! Was pretty much a twisty 2 lane road the entire way back so he could not get into for long if at all. He just enjoyed driving it and wanted to know how I kept the new car smell in it. But I was suprised that I had to tell him to get on it as he was just joy riding it. You should of sent them an invoice for that seal!

Did you guys get a chance to drive eachother's cars....now that would have been a blast.....I would have been up for it. Especially if there was a TTA and GNX involved. I've already driven a Supercharged T-bird. Completely different than the turbocharged Buick or Pontiac....but still fun to drive. The photoshoot was cool, I thought the rain was an omen at first but it made the black really stand out.....cloud cover is a dark colored car's best friend. :p

Now your in the dog house Aaron! :) If you read the article you would see we did a car swap/car comparison! :p I drove the SC first.. then the GNX and those guys all took turns on my TTA. Now go read it! :D

That's ok I'm always in trouble ;) I haven't gotten my issue yet, I usually get mine the first or second week of the month and read it from cover to cover the first night. But you can bet I will read every every word.....What did you think of the Super Bird? The GNX? I can't wait to read the article....can you tell.

Aaron

You can read it all on the web! Click here to read it now. click on the pages.. then when they open.. on the top right of the screen there is a pull down so you can make the picture full size! :) I scanned them 1024 so it should be nice and big on your screen! :D

Nice article, Hemmings did well. Sorry I just noticed the link in the beginning of your post. Seemed like an unfair comparison, comparing a Super Coupe (Super Bird as I call them) to the likes of a TTA or GNX. I like the Super Coupe, they are no GN/TR but they are fun to drive. I have seen a few TTAs but never have driven one and I have never seen a GNX in person, I know there is a low mileage one in town (Fresno) but I haven't hooked up with the owner yet. Consider your self fortunate to have driven or owned one of the hottest cars of the 80's. Have you registered your TTA with the GN Registry...That would be the next step I would take then apply for the Black Diamond Award. As mentioned before a complete shoe-in. Congrats on a fantastic article. One of the best I have read....I guess I'm biased.

Jim: I definitely did not intend to put a negative spin on your thread. I appreciate that you posted it. I signed up for the shoot, fully aware and realizing that Hemmings would not be held responsible for anything that could/would go wrong. I would expect any magazine to require a release disclaimer stating the same. And I really can't say that mine never went to print, a small pic or 2 was in the maybe Feb, 04 or maybe Feb, 05 semi-comparing a turbo Buick to a Syclone or the other one. I thought that hemmings giving credit to the owner of the other vehicle, and no mention or credit of me as owner of the turbo Buick was somewhat less of a class act and very inappropriate for a mag the size of Hemmings. You would think that you would credit everybody, or you would credit nobody. I guess that they thought that the owner of the Syclone or Typhoon was everybody, and I was nobody. Anyhow, I am happy for you and looking forward to reading the article.

It's all good Gary no worries! It's wild the power of the internet! The stuff you find out is amazing sometimes! Who would have ever known! I know your a picky guy like me when it comes to these cars and I'm sure it should have been all over. But not even a mention is crazy. But I'm sure the millions of pictures and cars these guys come out and see get lost in the mix all the time. The one main reason I feel ( from talking with the Hemmings people) our cars are just to new still. They like the older stuff that is for sure. If it's not an old muscle car it's something super new. I told them over and over they need to show more turbo Buick stuff in their publications.

Aaron: Glad you liked it! You would not believe the pages and pages I wrote up and sent them. I wanted this article to show the awesome power of the turbo Buick. I think after our cars were there at the shoot the found out the SC was out of place as well. The guy drove 2 of them there so I'm sure they didn't want to send him packing. I didn't know about the TTA's being in the registry. I'll have to check that out. I did my GN with them.

Thanks again guys for the comments! The nice part is print like this only drives the value of our cars up and up! :D

Sure the TTA is welcome, I just checked again to make sure. Under the registration there is a place for the 89' TTA and your sequential number. After you register make sure to apply for the Black Diamond Award. I'm sure your car will be the first TTA BDA recipient ever. Richard and Brett are really great guys.

I will second Aaron's coments regarding the award and Richard and Brett being great guys. My turbo-t was the 2nd car to win the award thanks to the recommendation by Aaron.

Good stuff! I did the registration and then was looking at the other TTA's on there and don't you know I signed up last year! lol I'll have to try that black diamond award. I also saw that TTA 395 is on there! My car's twin brother! Not much info on it though.. I always wondered where 395 and 397 were! The ultimate would be to buy GNX 396 now! :D

Please try for the BDA.....If selected the registry will send you a cools sticker and the oportunity to have plaques made at a reasonable price. I lucked out my WE4 was the first so they sent me a sticker for 2004 and a plaque for 2003 and 2004 since I had to wait a long time for the sticker. They don't let you apply for the award in consecutive years any more only every other year with new photos. You should see my 86' GN on there before too long. My old WE4 is used as an example for photographs, notice the blackwall Yokahamas. I purchased new Good Year GTIIs for the Hemmings photoshoot....The Good Years looked so much better than the Yokahamas. Let us know how it pans out. I don't know why more people don't apply.

Congrats on the feature! You're TTA is one of the best out there. The GNX looks very clean as well but I think those wheels look like crap.

Gary, I have that issue.

It was January 2005 and the title of the story was "Brawlers vs. Haulers". I found it odd that they used a pic of your car and engine with no mention whatsoever of the owner. Matter of fact, there is little mention even of the car itself in the half a sentence of print. Meanwhile every other vehicle that they paired-up a full paragraph or 2 is typed with the owner's name and town. I'd be pretty p-o'ed about the situation.

Sorry to get off track.

Congrats again to Jim for the feature!

Very nice! It is awesome to have your vehicle in a Magazine. My Jeep made the Cover as well as the feature Jeep in Full Size Jeep Magazine a couple of years back. It is amazing when people say that they had seen it in a magazine. There was no photo shoot for me, I had to do it myself.
On a different note, I used to on a Thunderbird SC and I did a lot of work on it trying to get in the 13s. Just not the same as the TTA or Buick. Seems to be a very nice car but it is not in the same league as the Turbo Buick power!
Congrads and Thanks!

Thanks vader! Front cover is nice and that's a nice shot on that cover of FSJ!! We were hoping for that.. but it's gonna be some time still before a turbo Buick makes the cover of Hemmings I think! I've been enjoying the reaction I've been getting when people see the article.. I think it's a riot.
For a Ferd hater like me I could see myself in the SC. Was nice and roomie inside but like you said I think you'll be dumping a ton of money into it to make it a fast car and still not get anywhere fast. The trans was getting that typical muddy feel the more I tested it that day! Then again when I test drive a car the gas pedal becomes a switch.. On or Off!

Now that I have a contact with Hemmings I'll be on them non stop for more turbo Buicks to show up in that publication! I talked to him yesterday and he said something about a Buick shoot out in the spring! So get your subscription now!
