As for a local shop, EJ Howe up in Conroe might still be doing some stuff but he recently bought a place in the hill country & unfortunately LC & Janace of Conley's Performance Plus retired & closed up shop about a year ago.

What kinda help / work are you needing done?

What's the problem? There are a LOT of local guys that help each other out. Also where about are you in the area? Welcome to the area. Jon Hanson

type of help in houson

well guys my car was running rich and had a hesitation and just generally running bad. I talked to the guys at jays gn and kirban and they had me replace the mass air. That is after I had it put on a scanner and gave them the numbers they asked for. It ran better but not completely right. It seems to have gotten worse. It runs rich enough that if it is idiling you can smell the gas at the tailpipe. Once your in it and it starts to build boost it seems to run good. If at a stop light it idles a little low then picks up. When this happens the check engine light comes on. When I put my little scanner on it though there are no codes. They guys at kirban told me maybe the ecm was bad. But they said it needed to be put on a scanner to find out for sure. The wife is pregnant and quitting work right now and I am lucky to just still have my car still. I stopped by a shop near my house in atascocita and they wanted 125.00 to put it on a scanner and i just don't have it to pay to only scan it, in case I need to buy the ecm. Keep in mind this is a 99percent original 87GN with 33K on it and this problem happened one day out of no where and the mass airflow did help but it is not right.

Any help would be great
Thanks,
Mike

Mike what kind of MAF did you install? If it was a reman unit from the local autoparts, they don't always work right. It sounds like it really needs a good tune up and a couple of key upgrades. Does it still have a stock chip? If so a new chip from Eric Marshal can do wonders with driveability. It is probably running rich due to a cracked exhaust header. Even with the crack you would be surprised how much better it drives with a modern chip. Do you have a volt meter? If so you can backprobe the middle wire (blue) on the TPS (throttle position sensor) and make sure that at idle it reads around .42-.44. I would also check and replace all the vacuum hoses if it hasn't been done in a while. A good vacuum leak can cause all sorts of issues on these cars.

only upgrades...

it has a chip from caspers the kind with the thumb wheel for changing. A three in down pipe. And the KN filter kit. That is all that has been done. The MAF was a reman ac delco from JN's Gn's in pittsburgh. I replaced the vacummn lines on the turbo but thats it. I have always had older muscle cars and this is the first computerized car and I just don't know alot about them yet. With the volt meter the red probe into the blue wire and ground the black to the car? Is there a particular spot to look on the exhaust header or which side is most likely to crack? Anybody around the atascocita area that has some knowledge that could help me?

Mike,

Congrats on the pregnant wife.... What part of Atascocita. I live in Atascocita also. I have a scanner I can put on it to check it out. I'm super busy this weekend but maybe early next week I can hook you up.
