Just two questions: 1. What are the stock turbo's for the 84-85, and the 86-86 (ex. ta-33...ta-49...etc...) and 2. What all is involved in adapting the ta-49 on a stock 84? Thanks

John...from what I hear for the TA-49 the compressor housing needs modification where it goes into the intake...I have HEARD that our stock 0-ring'ed adapter is too small, and it will not create a good seal....so the intake adapter would have to be welded to the Comp housing of the turbo...I am speaking from Hear/say....so please dont quote me....try calling up a vendor like Jack Cotton, or John Craig.

Why not go for the TA-33C?

I got a TA-33C when my stocker bit the dust, and I couldn't be happier with it. Right now I am getting about 16-18psi of boost on stock injectors, and it spools up just as fast..if not faster then the stock turbo....I am sorry, but I don't have any pics of my "Before, and After" of when my stocker underwent the change into a 33. I should have those pics in a few days....I couldnt belive the difference...when they change the stocker into the 33 they REALLY take out alot of meterial, and the wheels are monsters compared to the stockers.

The one question I pose is...are you moving enough air to spool a 49? You have the stock downpipe and such? Have a converter in the car?

Just trying to look out for you, and save you some $!

TR84...thanks so much for the reply...so, the 33c is the way to go huh?!?...I just ordered a whole bunch of stuff (like $600 worth) including an ATR up and downpipe, as well as a turbolink, knock guage, boost guage, a #28 - 93 octane chip, 160 thermo, adjustable wastegate, and some other goodies; so does this sound right? Well thanks for the info, and let me know if this sounds like I'm on the right track? (no word yet on the whole warrenty issue, but I'll put a request in for the upgrade...o, and this is an EXACT BOLT ON right?) Thanks

o, and I want to stay as legal as I can, do you recommend I gut the cat?

The TA-33C is your old turbo.....it just gets its guts all ripped out..new center section..new wheels, and your old housings are all opened up a great amount!

Gutting the car would be good....Just buy a test pipe, and when it comes to inspection time put the Cat back on....yea...your still legal...SHHH :)

My 85 had a TA49 on it with the stock intake, and it bolted right on. Now it has the v2 set-up.

moving enough air to spool a 49? A ta49 is NOT a big turbo.. I dont think a stock hotair would have a problem spooling it.. granted you cant really take huge advantage of it with a tiny stock dp, but still.. unless you have hooker headers.. i dont think you'd have a problem.

A true ta49 is clocked a bit different and will need a different way of mounting to the intake, but it can be done without much trouble..
