The turbo on my 85 GN is in need of some tender loving care. I am leaking past the seals and there is a ton of play at the intake end. My question is, I see kits available to rebuild these turbos. I have also read postings about doing a rebuild yourself. The kits are around $100. How do you guys feel about doing your own rebuilds? Have you done any and how were the results?

I rebuilt mine but haven't got the car on the road yet so I don't know for sure how it will perform. It was fairly easy...time consuming...but easy. I would recommend taking yours apart BEFORE you buy the kit to make sure it is, infact, rebuildable. Inspect the compressor housing and fins for contact with each other and FOD.(foreign object damage) i.e. dirt, sand etc. Make sure there are no cracks in ANY of the fins, compressor or exhaust side, and no chips or rough or sharp edges. Also inspect the shaft journals for scoring or pits...they should look like chrome where the bearings ride. If yours has "a ton of play at the intake end" I would really look hard at the shaft and the compressor wheel. If you do decide to rebuild, invest in some engine assembly lube for reassembly. It is cheap, and thicker than oil so it will still be there when you start the engine. It could take a few seconds for the engine to pump oil in there. HTH ---Keith

Thanks for the replies. BW, thanks for the offer. I just bought a new Precision turb center unit from Jack Cotton yesterday. If I had seen your offer, I would have picked up your turbo, it sounds good. Thanks again, Frank
