I have black, sticky residue in my 87 GN intercooler and connections. There is a breather on the passenger valve cover, so I assume the turbo has a leaking oil seal. It is a factory unit. Where can I get it rebuilt in the Houston area? I live in Katy.

Now would be the time to upgrade to a bigger turbo.:eek: Be sure and wash the intercooler out.
 
Thanks for the info. The shop on 290 is not far from here. Any suggestions on best method for cleaning out the intercooler?

It's not uncommon for some oil residue to be in the IC due to the tube that used to be in the pass side to the turbo inlet. Sounds like there is a breather there now, but how long has it been there? The oil residue could have remaind for thousands of miles.
I'd pull the IC off and if there not oil pouring out of the IC once off I wouldn't worry about it, especially if its not smoking any when driving.

Do clean out the IC while its off and if the breather tube is removed, then oil should not reappear if that is what it was originally from.
To clean it, I just poured gas in the IC, slosh it around and dump it out, repeat until the gas comes out clean.
 
Thanks. It's my next project, as soon as I get my new Walbro 340 fuel pump in. Is there a step-by-step procedure anywhere for turbo removal, or is it so simple, it's not needed?

It's pretty straight forward, should take you less than an hour to have it off.
Remove intake hose.
Remove output hose to IC
Disconnect oil drain tube on bottom
Disconnect vac tubes to actuator and compressor housing
Disconnect oil feed tube on top.
Remove the J-bracket, 2 or 3 bolts on turbo and 2 on block, the bottom one can be a killer to get to without the right type wrench.
Then remove the 3 bolts to the exhaust manifold and its off.
 
Thanks for the help. New problem! I took off the gas tank to put in the new pump and noticed all the plastic baffles in the tank. Even with the unit out, I can't get the remaining gas to come out. How do you clean out one of these tanks?
 
Go to gnttype.com (my link doesn't work!:confused: ) & check out the tech articles. Removal and rebuild articles are posted there, turbo comparison charts, lots of good stuff! I'm rebuilding mine & polishing the compressor housing while I'm at it. The first time you take one off can be a PITA :mad: , just be patient.
BTW I'm in the Memorial City/Town & Country area
