Tweaked?

Did Tweaked make a clean pass? On Thursday it seemed he might have it ironed out, then it looked like more trouble.

We had problems getting my car to spool on Wednesday and Thursday. Traced it down to a bad MSD DIS-4 - went back to bone stock Buick coil pack ignition. Unfortunately we hurt the converter in the process. We did manage to get the thing to run in spite of itself on Friday with a little "creative" tuning and engineering - 8.20 in 1st round of Quick 8, 8.22 in 2nd Round, and 8.25 in a grudge race with Rod Hedrickson(hope that's his name) in his blown 455 Skyhawk. These runs were all on a mild tune-up. I had a lot of problems keeping the thing hooked up on the big end in high gear - had to do a lot of pedaling all week - ended up putting enough wing angle on the spoiler to run NASCAR trying to keep it planted which cost a good bit of MPH.
With a little more fine tuning and some more seat time, I should have her back in the 7's soon:D

Will,
Yours makes the 4th piece of crap MSD4 to take a dump this Nats alone. Cal, Bob Armstrong, and Jason Cramer all suffered from the same.

I was glad to see Tweaked back. Even bought an autographed one from Lawrence. Good luck with your tuning, maybe it will be the fastest Buick again.

These things definitely have their issues. Heard that MSD has revised some of the more recent ones - unfortunately, mine was one of the first ones to come out. They haven't bothered to tell anyone about this as I understand things. I am definitely getting rid of all the stock related ignition crap and going with a distributor and MSD 7AL. Back to the basics simple-stupid.

Thanks for your support. We have plenty more power once we get all the "little" stuff sorted out;)

I dont want to speak for Will but.... His car ran high 7's SIX YEARS ago! He has only made improvements since then. I am sure the car will run, just a matter of getting it out there and making some passes on it. I think Will should also 86 that Big Brute trans but thats just me! I have never had any luck with the MSD digital stuff on anything we have built, I have the old school 7al2 in my racecar after the digital box wouldnt work.

:) Congrats Will !! Glad to see the car coming back to life.

Besides your car, I also found that Bobby Peterson & Al Liverman's DIS-4 also caused their cars performance issues.

THANKS JOE ...

Often it is a good idea to get a fresh set of eyes to help diagnose a problem.

I want to take this opportunity to personally thank Joe Lubrant for taking the time to come over to look at issues we were having with Tweaked.

The extra set of eyes & ears certainly helped.

It was GREATLY appreciated!

Have a nice day.

Will,

You will =) be very happy with the distributor and older style box.
A dyno proven performance improvment, plus you have the added benifit of it working:D

You may want to consider a transmission change or at least run it with a regular converter!

I know kendall and a few others are big fans of the distributor setup, does anyone have some dyno info from someone like duttweiler who has tested the difference? I know I will never go the MSD route, but I don't know if this ign setup dies which direction I'll go. I've already murdered one stock module.

From duttweiler's shop 1400ish with DIS and some issues.
1550ish with the MSD and distributor.

I think if you do a search on the different BB or when GnTTYPE is back up you will find this has been brought up before. Any of the test I read showed the old system would make at least 50+ hp over the stock coil pak. Most people who run in the 10 sec range do ok with the stock system but faster than that I think you need to at least look at the old way. I just switch my car over this past winter and have not had it to the track yet. LC did put it on his dyno to check the fuel map and had to add fuel to the middle of it.

The car on a mild pull of 19. something made 677 hp. Sorry I did not put the car on the dyno to check before the switch to the dist and MSD system.

The biggest thing is the cost to switch over but if you want to go faster what can I say. :)

The ignition will definitely be upgraded to 7AL2 in the near future. (is going back old school downgrading? ) Hey, if it works it works! The Big Brute works great - when it works correctly. I do need to get used to that high gear lockup again - you have no idea how brutal it is! My biggest obstacle is getting over that little spot to spool the turbo on launch. It was my fault the converter got hurt - got it too hot testing boost rise in the pits - boiled the fluid. I really want to go Billy's route with the Liberty 5sp - but not with this chassis. If I'm going to that much trouble and expense, I want this thing to loose some weight and be certified below 7.50s

Thanks for all the input - it is appreciated. Thanks to Joe Lubrant for helping us figure out the MSD took a dump! At least I have a spare WBO2 now!;)

Ken Duttweiler has told me a couple of times to get rid of the DIS-4 and go to a distributor looks like I ought to give it a little more thought.
