Nope, you only *need* to retard if you increase the plug gap. With the increase in gap, the initial *flame kernel* is larger so it propogates thur the chamber slightly faster.

Actually because the the flame propogates faster there is less chance for detonation. The reason being is theres less time for detonation to occur.

That Is one of the first things I change over on our cars. The type II system does make the car idle a little better.LEE I have never had any trouble with the swap does it make it read wrong or something.???

I was installing a GNX dash in a friends car. All VDO gages. The tach would either bounce or not work @ all. I chased the problem for 3 days. Had a new tach sent to me, had Casper send a new black box that he supplys for the dash. Notheing worked untill I switched back over to the stock type coil. I switched them 3 times to make sure it was the coils. Even took the coil pack off my car car, so there is no doubt that THAT VDO tach would not work with a Type II coil.
BTW Tom Houser (who built the dash ) went way beyond what most vendors would do to help me. John @ Caspers also.

But by the same token, wouldn't retarding the timing give detonation more time to develope.
