I know that knock caused by too much boost for the octane being used is bad. Is knock caused by DP hitting, loose motor mounts, transitional, etc. just as bad?
False knock is bad in terms of not running up to optimal performance when that occurs. It's pulling timing out when it shouldn't be. Lost timing is lost performance. If you have the stock wastegate system you are also loosing boost when this happens.
I feel transitional knock can be damaging over time. I don't like to see it at all. If it's there there is more tuning and/or chip program changes to do.
You want to tune out all knock retard and be able to just tickle the sensor (1-2 degrees) when you are on the edge. That will give you best performance and longest engine life. I personally like to see zero knock counts and zero retard through the run with max of 2 degrees or less retard.
Thanks Chad. I also tune for zero knock at the track but I do get transitional knock on the street when I kick it down from a roll and I wonder if it is because of the timing in my Extender chip. I have 23/21 and maybe the 23 is too much. Any thoughts on that? I see we have about the same combo except for the turbo. Do you still run the stock D5?
