Hey gang: What do we use to repaint and touch up under the hood on an '87 GN? Anything close to what Buick used?

Thanks

Dave

I used John Deere "Blitz Black". Laughed when someone mentioned it, but tried it anyhow, was glad I did. It is semi flat, and damn near bullet proof. Comes in a spray can or reg can to put in a spray gun. 6+ years, most of them daily driver miles and still looks fresh.

Thanks for the info. I presume you get this paint at a JD dealer? Is this paint flat or semi or?? The oem paint looks sort of semi gloss to me.

Dave

I did get it at a dealer, and the can says "intended for low gloss black applications". I didn't worry about straying from the factory color or amount of gloss as I preferred the engine to be prettier than the bay, but if you were trying to stay 100% factory, maybe a little more gloss would be better. Not sure how glossy the factory was, would have to look through some pics of low mileage cars or pics of a local guys GNX I have somewhere.

I used tractor paint on my inner fender that I replaced. Looks just like the side that DIDN'T get wrecked:cool: It has held up great the last few years.

I used the VHT silver for the turbo shield and it is awesome. It looks exactly the way it did the day I painted it. I took it to work and painted it the heated as the instructions said. In between coats I put it in front of our 1.5 million btu natural gas heaters. I did this process 3 times and it came out perfect without having to prime it. VHT is great high heat paint.

How much is the blitz black from JD?

I really like a paint called “Under Hood Black” produced by Martin Senior. You can pick it up at most Napa/Flowers Paint Stores. It’s a semi flat that lays down like no other Blk rattle can paint I’ve ever used and I’ve used a lot. It's pricey at $9 a can but well worth it to me for those areas that the eye can see.

I tried the underhood paint from NAPA, as one of you suggested, and I must say this is the best applying paint I have ever used. The split spray button on the rattle can is much better them the press down spray button that most spray cans use. The paint looks great, just a nice semi black. $8.99 a can is fair for a good product like this, and it is always available at the local NAPA parts store.

Thanks for steering me in the right direction.

How much effort are you guys putting into this? I assume you're not painting the firewall, as that would be really hard to do without pulling the motor. Plus, that should be shiny like the rest of the car. Are you mainly just doing the inner fenders? How about the piece on top of the radiator? Are you removing the sensors or just taping over everything? Any before and after pics?

I can only tell you what I am doing, but I mask off anything I don't want to paint, I did the radiator support(can't afford a chrome one), the cruise control bracket. Just the things that look a little "ratty" and can be painted without taking them off. I bought new decals from Kirban for the rad support, so it looks pretty much original. I do like the paint that one of the guys suggested, it looks good and is easy to apply.

Thanks
Dave
