Not a G-body but would prolly get the answer quicker with a lot more cars in production.

Q. Is anyone running an elctric vaccum pump for their brakes?

I'm currently running a 218* cam on 108*. It's installed +4* and need some help in the vaccum dept. I'm running a pt-51 with a .63 housing and a 2800 restalled D5. I'm thinking a good electric vaccum pump hooked into the brake light plunger switch would turn on when I need it thus not killing the pump too soon. Right now I can get about 3psi before it noses over and starts pushing. It would spin the nittos at will, but the MT dr's are something entirely different. I'm having trouble spinning them on damp pavement

Thanx for the help...

Pete

Easy fix, change the cam :p

Ya got a 9 second cam with a 11 second turbo and 12 second converter. A bit of a mismatch ;)

You can run a vacuum pump.. the assist pump came in the latter 80's GM FWD cars. Master Power Brakes makes a kit.

HTH

Still say fix it correctly and put in a smaller cam ;)

Always has to be a wise guy in the group. :D

If you can access any junk 85 thru 87 front drive caddies, they all have vacuum pumps........located under the battery location.

Dont wanna go into the motor again, Have a BB 65 waiting to put it back on. A 2800 stall 12" shouldn't have a problem spooling it. Had it on there before, just couldn't get more than 4 psi, need a little more vaccum to hold the front brakes, but thanx for your input

Think I'll look into the caddy pump and the 03 cobra pump as a last resort(prolly be expensive).

A 2800 stall converter with your set up isn't helping you much either. You are developing a lot of power and the converter is coming on way to soon to let the engine spool without trying to push it all thru the trans and making the car not hold on the line for you. Just a thought. Doesn't seem to be too many real fixes for you other than using a bandaid to work with it. I would suggest trying to get an answer from some guys in the tune section to see what they feel would be your optimum set up with all you are running. It seems as if your brake problem is more of a symptom of mis matched set up on engine, turbo, and converter.
If you do need to add a vacuum pump, any of the older GM's with a deisel would work well for you. Have seen many guys running big overlap cams using this very set up to aid in vacuum assist.
IMHO

I dont want to build more boost, at 3psi when i let off the brakes it climbs very quickly where the tires are tearing at the pavement already. I'm not asking to help build more boost just hold what I got. Overall with the larger cam the brakes aren't very good which is the main reason for the question not that I want more boost to build. I probably couldn't hold too much more before the tires go up in smoke anyway....

Thanx,

Sorry if my ? was misunderstood......

Trans will be history soon anyway! Just helping it along :)
