Valve cover breather, KB design, need stuffing

I have a what I think is a KB valve cover breather, it is a 2" tall aluminum adapter with a push in breather that sits on top. I took the filter part off the stand pipe and I noticed there is no demister stuffing in the adapter. Is there suppose to be something inside the pipe and if so what can I use? It just seems like there should be something that could catch the oil mist before getting to the actual breather. What do you guys know of these?? Thanks for the help.

I use stainless steel pot scrubbers for demisting. Be sure that there is a screen or such so that it can't fall into the engine.
