Our BRF transmission was rebuilt by a former GM Hydramatic employee some time ago. The gear changes are pretty firm and seem to happen right on time.
Recently, the car has begun to lurch hard on a downshift at light throttle - as if the transmission is going back to first gear for an instant when the vehicle speed and throttle position would suggest a downshift only as low as second. It only lasts for a second, and then the car accelerates normally. This problem occurs infrequently, and we have seen it happen when the trans is hot and also when cold.

What could cause this? The TV cable hasn't been adjusted in some time, but most shifts occur at exactly the right time so I don't want to change the adjustment.

I don't know what mods have been performed to the trans during the rebuild because it was in the car when we bought it, but I do believe that it has been perfect all the time until now.

Any suggestions?

Hey you bozo, haven't heard from you in a while. Bruce and I talked about that a long time ago when Kristi first complained about it. If I remember correctly, we reached the conclusion that it was binding up on the 3-2 downshift when you were coasting to a stop. I/we think the band is coming on before the direct clutches let go. We didn't mess with it for fear of creating a 2-3 flair on the WOT 2-3 upshift. Is it worse now? Or is it still the same and Kristi is just getting annoyed with it?

Hey Alan!

The car that we talked about a while back was Old Gray - which is still awaiting the new engine. This problem (sheesh...it never ends, does it) is with a different car - Kristi's GN-powered Monte Carlo SS. She's owned it for about seven months now.

BTB, the engine you built for us is running great. It now has about 4300 miles on it and it seems VERY STRONG, although we have yet to really test it. We still have some tuning to do, and we'll get to it as soon as we're settled in our new house.

Whaddaya think about Kristi's transmission problem?

Try taking just one or two clicks out of the cable. That may give it just enough slack to take that bind up out of the 3-2. I'd bet that one has the same problem as the grey car. Maybe just a little worse. Two clicks shouildn't hurt a thing, and it will be easy to go back the other way.

Oh, and ask Kristi exactly how many laps of a Winston Cup race it takes to get the bolts in the ground straps on the back of the head. When she gets through cussing me, give her a hug for me. I still say you should have moved all your parents south instead.

Call me or email me if you need anything.
