The buick must ben in a "mood" today. We took it on a nice ride to the state fair. Ran great all the way there, when we got off 95 went maybe 2 miles as we are sitting in stop and go traffic water temp is past 240 scanmaster says 245. I am like WTF. So I get it parked and expect the worst as I open the hood. No leaks anywhere system still full of pressure. Start car up turn on AC fans are working. Spend a few minutes lookin around and nothing is abnormal. At this point thinking maybe T stat did something funny. It is a 160...kirbans ....I believe. maybe 10k miles and 5 years old.

Go to leave and I open the radiator maybe 1 /2 inches low. Nothing that would cause a warm condition. Drive to 711 and get water top it off and perfect all the way home...85 miles....get home and idle it with AC and stays at 162ish. turn off AC and still good. Can here the fans cycling at 178 and going off about 162. Put it on the lift and look around underneath....looks fine.

Was getting ready to take it on a 4hr trip each way with some idling in traffic forsure at the end of Oct. Has me a bit concerned.

No coolant loss,no coolant in oil,no evidence of leaks, fans working as they should,no restrictions at front of car.

Any ideas before I toss a new stat in it?

No, the temp gauge and mechanical guage where damn close so that rules both out. I have checked everything I can think of....short of ripping it apart. :)

Well, it wouldnt hurt to change out the thermostat and take it for a little cruise and see if it happens again. My F350 has a failing t-stat but since those t stats fail open the temps go WAY down. From a normal 192 operating temp it shoot down at times rapidly to 147ish and hang around there for a while until it fixes itself.
