IMO I believe that is too harsh. I am not a animal lover by any stretch so I can't relate to the attachment aspect. But I don't see why we are allowed to shoot and kill deer as a sport with no jail time. Animals are animals right? What makes that acceptable?
Hunting deer with a license is legal last time I checked. Also when a high power hits a deer it is usually generally dead rather quickly and some people use the meat for food. (I am not a deer hunter by the way but have many friends that are)
Did a quick Google on Dog Fighting and this was the first link that came up.
It is a Felony in North America. There is the difference.
United States
Main article: Dog fighting in the United States
Dog fighting is illegal in all North American countries.
According to a study by the College of Law of the Michigan State University published in 2005, in the United States, dog fighting was once completely legal and was sanctioned and promoted during the colonial period (1600s through 1776) and continuing through the Victorian era in the late 19th century. However, by the early twentieth century, the brutality inherent in dog fighting was no longer tolerated by American society. It has become increasingly outlawed, a trend which has continued into the 21st century.[2]
As of 2007, dog fighting is a felony in 48 states and a misdemeanor in Idaho and Wyoming. In most states, it is against the law (and often a felony) to even attend a dog fighting event, regardless of direct participation. According to authorities, dog fighting is increasingly practiced by gangs, and is linked to other unlawful activities, such as gambling.[3]
Despite legality issues, dogs are still commonly used for fighting purposes all across the continent. The American Pit Bull Terrier is the most popular breed used for fighting, but foreign breeds, such as the Dogo Argentino (used widely in South America) and Presa Canario (used in Spain) are also gaining popularity.
It's funny how we watch UFC where you beat the shilt out of each other ie blood sport and it's OK. One guy just died last week from it but it makes money so it's OK. Where is the logic KILL A HUMAN and it's Ok, KILL A DOG AND GO TO JAIL. Is human life worthless compared to a dog. We watch all kinds of sports were the athletes, becomes crippled for life, broken bones, mental problems etc and we laugh and clap. Vick is a pawn just like Martha Stewart, Conrad Black etc. Clinton committed purjury and gets off. It all depends on what side of the fence you are on.

I argued this before, and opened a big can of worms. People get attached to dogs so it's labeled wrong. Thats really all there is it to it. Dog meat isn't that good(very tough) so eating them isn't popular like deer, cow, pigs etc.
To me dead is dead, whether its slow or fast. They are both 4 legged animals with feelings. They eat, sleep, s h i t, pee the same way. Killing dogs is nothing that I condone, but I don't feel its worth jail time. They were going to put down Pitbulls here in Toronto over the summer because they felt these where not city dogs and there was reports of these dogs jumping/bitting school kids. Give a very heavy fine as punishment. The endorsements etc he will lose in the process should be more then enough. If he was some regular Joe off the street and got caught it would not be advertised this much. But because he is in the limelight, he is the focal point. This guys carreer is done like he actually killed a human. Just doesn't make sense to me. He is not a bad guy, he just made a bad choice. We do the same with our Buicks exceeding the speed limits on streets. Doesn't make us a bad guy, just mean we made a bad choice. And you can say its not the same, but what happens if you actually kill somebody because the car got outta control??
