Hello. I was just wondering if anyone knows how to decode the VIN to see what number car I have. It's an '87 GN, and the VIN is:

1G4GJ1172HP454911

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Also, moderators, if this post is in the wrong spot, please relocate as needed. Thanks!

Your 87 GN car number is "454911". The GN's aren't "numbered" per se, like the GNX cars (1-547). The RPO code label on the trunk lid would show WE2 as a Grand National car. The VIN is stamped on the engine block, transmission and car frame. Does that answer your question?

Your car is the 54,911th Regal made. No sequence numbers on these mass produced cars. Go by the build date on the cowl tag if you want to know when about it was assembled. Thats as close as it gets. It doesn't matter anyway. GM made 27,590 turbocharged Regals in 1987. No glory in saying you have the first one or last one or even the 21,654th one made.
