Update: i got a TCC solenoid from a local business called Trans-Tech - awsome guys to deal with. they gave me the TCC solenoid kit for $20 and a BYO container deal for tranny fluid - $5/gal!

i did the work last night and also checked the speedo gear - which was in fine shape. i was hoping to find a problem with the gear to account for the speedo issues. i gotta look elsewhere, the speedo still does the same thing - only works below 10mph or when coasting in neutral.

on the test drive I found the convertor was still not locking up (yes, it was at temp)! i forced LU through the ALDL and it worked - success! sort of.

the brake pedal still kicks the LU off, but it will not LU by itself. So now i gotta chase the harness back and see what i can find.

any other insight to the speedo issue would be welcome!

The converter isn't going to lock automatically until you get the speedo fixed.
Did you pull the governor to see if the gear was ok?

x2

Your VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor(Small Box behind your dash)) has an wire with an optical sensor that reads your speedometer in order to tell your ECM your speed. If you speedometer is not working above 10mph then your chip will never command your ECM to lockup your converter. When you buy your VSS make sure you get one for an Analog dash if that's what you have.

yes - i pulled the gov and gear looked just fine. it appeared to spin ok as well. however, the speedo works up to 15 mph now, before it only worked below 10 - if that is related to me taking the gear out or not, i have no idea!

yes i have an analogue dash - is the VSS a 'dealer only' thing?

A few more things to check

1) Is the square drive in the speedo gear rounded?

2) Excessive gear side play in the bullet that holds the speedo drive gear.

3) Is the cable engaged all the way in the back of the speedo?

1) no, the shape of the driven cable is good

2) good question - i thought it was not enganged correctly when i took it out, but i don't know if i'm looking for anything special here:confused: As soon as i took the speedo cable off the gov, the thin center driveshaft was protruding more than common sense would allow it (1/2 inch or more). leaving me to think there is an engagement issue on the gear side of the gov - that being said, it appeared that the gear and the 'driveshaft' for the gear has no external limits or retainers, i just pushed it back in until it stopped. when i took the gov assy out, the gear looked fine and spun freely so i pushed it back together and put the assy back in the trans.

3) never took the dash out - yet. but i will do that.

thanks for the great feedback!
