I've had an error 24 code that I've been trying to sort out for a while now, the car has an aftermarket GNX style gauge cluster using VDO gauges but has been very badly fitted, the wiring is terrible a real mess.
Slowly I've been improving it but have been plagued by error 24 which I think I've got to the bottom of, Ive attached a picture of what I believe is the VSS buffer (correct me if I'm wrong), I pulled this out of the rear of the dash only to find the wires have been cut and are attached to nothing! Can some one please tell me where they should go, they are coloured green/black, red/black, and black. Any help gratefully recieved.

Is your VDO speedometer a mechanical unit or electric?
Not sure about the electric speedo, but I know 100% for sure that the mechanical VDO gauge use an external VSS sender that is inline to your speedo cable.
I have this type of set up in my car & you don't require the use of the factory VSS sender . It came with & is commonly used in the AVC (GNX Style) Dash.

Hi Dave, speedo is an 160mph electric programmable, the VSS sender is a 2 pulse Painless Performance one that I am running straight off the transmisson instead of inline. The speedometer is running O.K., but I have no cruise control and there is no MPH reading on my Scanmaster.

The ecm needs a vss signal from your sender, you may have to tap into it and use caspers VSS buffer to translate the signal so the Buick can read it. I did this with my VDO gauges. the vss wasn't completely accurate but it was close.

Hi, Steve, have you details of how you tapped into it?

Glen

Hey Glen,

Here's a copy of the installation instructions from AVC regarding the install of their dash which happenes to use VDO gauges.
I followed these step when I installed my VDO gauges. Of course, the speedometer used was the "mechanical" VDO unit.
Hope this helps.

The Signal wire from the sender I split one to the speedometer and one to the Caspers VSS buffer, basically I used a butt connector with two wires coming out of one end.
From the Vss buffer (which has three wires power ground and signal) to the VSS to ECM on the factory bulkhead connector at the dash area.

You may be able to run that VSS directly to the cruise and ECM. It should work if it is a digital/optical type output. If it is a magnetic output type then it won't work, need to buffer it first. Both the cruise and ECM expect a 2K PPM VSS signal. Do you have the part # for the VSS, if so post it and I'll see what they have to say.

IIRC, the Caspers converter is for when using a 16 PPM VSS.

FWIW, in the first post on the stock VSS buffer, the three wires that are cut go to an optical pickup. This pickup is mounted to the rear of the speedometer where it 'picks up' the reflections of a rotating bar.

That is correct I had a 16 pulse. I forgot if you have a good 2 pulse signal it should be easily read by the ECM

Many thanks for taking the trouble to upload the instructions Dave, any info is useful.

Thanks for the info, the VSS I'm using is a Painless Performance part # 60115

Got a couple of hours on it after work today, reinstalled the vss buffer and tapped into the signal wire which I then connected to the green/black wire on the buffer................and now everything is running sweeeeeet, got a Scanmaster reading and the cruise control is working. Thanks for the help guys!
