So VW's can tell when you hook up the emissions testers and alters then it engine's running program to burn more efficiently. Wonder how many manufacturers actually do this? I thought it was funny when the CEO came out and said "we're not sure how this mistake happened....." Well it starts with your Programming Dept and goes from there.
Just own it. "We outsmarted the Emissions Guy for _ years."

We just switch chips to an emissions chip.

The solution to pollution is dilution. All the car makers do it. VW is the Rob Blagojevich of the auto industry.

Hadn't heard that saying before but so true! I had an 80's mustang that had a smog pump on it. Basically pumped air into the exhaust to dilute the tailpipe.

After watching ABC national news tonight, it's apparently mostly liberal "greenies" that bought these things and they're all about to commit mass suicide over their part in killing the environment...

One can only hope...........:D:D:D

I'm a diesel calibrator, I manage a team of engineers that calibrates heavy duty diesels at a major OEM. What VW did is just completely ridiculous.

Nitrogen oxide emissions 40 times above the legal limit is sure going to be tough to top. An even bigger surprise though was hearing that VW is the number one automaker in the world(not for long). Who the hell wants a VW? {Dah-dah-dah}

Yeah, a $7 billion fine, that'll hurt bad. And I bet their stock is plummeting. But unlike Toyota years back with the sticky accelerators, this is something VW was knowingly and willingly doing; to the tune of 11 million alleged vehicles. That alone will make it hard to regain and instill trust with consumers.

actually, the official story is that the extra air helps burn the residual fuel in the exhaust and helps the cat converter light off faster on cold starts.... it, like, totally doesn't dillute the air... that's, like, totally ridiculous and stuff..

Being a mechanic back in the the day, I remember when pretty much all the '80's cars had air pumps on them and the GN didn't have one.
I remember asking a Buick engineer friend of mine how the GN got by without one. His response was the GN didn't need one, because GM said so.
The cat and mouse game never ends, I guess, but when your playing it for global stakes, it can go BOOM!

Don't you all smell the noxious fumes when you're behind a vw? LOL!

If you want to do something for the air, outlaw 6.0l ford diesels. Those things will asphyxiate you from mile away.

It's more about the money then the environment.... There are so many hunks of shit driving around spewing noxious fumes in the air that does not need any special equipment to know it's happening.

Get it together EPA! Bunch of idiots.....

Apparently the CEO stepped-down so that he can spend more time with his attorneys. :D

I'm sure it sucks driving a 3 cylinder 60 HP car. Prolly sucks even worse after enabling the emissions controls drops it to 40 HP...

I live in a state where diesels do not have to pass emissions. I couldn't give a shit less about emissions. However, some IDIOTS at the federal level say ALL DIESELS must conform to these ridiculous emissions restrictions. Even though I'm not subject to testing at the state or county level, I have pay for this shit on my vehicle. PLUS suffer the headaches of having it repaired when it malfunctions. And let me tell you, they DO malfunction...A LOT. Everyone I know that owns a diesel, be it ford dodge or gm, has experienced a malfunction of the emissions system. My biggest frustration is that the emissions system malfunction can and WILL limit the vehicle speed to 4 (yes a whopping FOUR) miles per hour. Try driving 20 miles in the middle of the night at 4 mph. To me, this is the equivalent of limiting my speed to 4 because I'm not wearing my seat belt. Emissions should be an option. If YOU are worried about emissions,YOU PAY FOR IT!! End of rant.

Anyone seen this one? From a 11 Dodge Ram 5500. It stated if DEF system not serviced in 200mi that the engine would not restart, then began to count down. My choice would've been to just never turn the truck off again. Seen the same message on a 12 Dodge Ram 5500. Seems to be nothing but problems with DEF systems. Also, seen system issues on the new Freightliner M2s(Cummins), Hinos, and Mitsubishi Fusos. The filter gets gunked-up, the pump burns out, the injector goes bad, and the system gets water in it. No surprise, since the fluid is 1/3 urea and 2/3 de-ionized water. If you go below 1/2 tank it will power downgrade the engine, but won't give you the reduced power message til about just under a 1/4; even though you can tell it happened long before notification. And the cost of the fluid itself, ridiculous. But hey, they do give you a cool holographic sticker.

I have a TDI 06' so it doesn't fall in the effected class and I love it! With the reflash it makes right around 240# of torque and 140HP in a car that is fairly light and still gets nearly 50MPG combined. I have not lost any trust in VW and actually like them more now.... I feel that after they do the required emissions update what ever it is the guys out there selling flash tuners will see an increase in sales for sure.

I've owned a couple Passats in the past but not the TDI's. They build nice cars that feel solid. Some you get it just feel like barely held together plastic.
I feel for the Diesel troubles 87WE-2 and RodRuckus described.- that stinks. I am glad we don't emissions test in Iowa!

We own a 14 VW CC R-line and its a great car. Its not a TDI so its not a part of this whole deal but I haven't lost any trust for VW. This is not a safety issue its an EPA/money grab issue. They didn't cut corners on items that could cost people thier lives like GM and other manufacturers have done in the recent past. Just about everyone on this board has removed emission equipment from thier car or it at least defeated it thru the ECU so I feel like this just gives me more in common with VW. The EPA is out of control and I bet VW is not the only one to get around testing in this manner.
