Greetings all! Long story short, I spent some time the other day talking to Don at Precision. He was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. However, I think I came away more confused than ever. I have some kind of Turbonetics Turbo(from early 2002) and am really not happy with it. Very slow to spool and seems to build power only at high rev's..Part of the issue is my convertor(son to be replaced with a 3200 L/U)..The other part is, I want to know what's in my car. SO, that being said, I'm looking to pick up something that is going to spool REALLY quick, and make enough power to break the tires loose on the street. I dont know how much time I will be spending at the track, so it'll mainly be for spanking the occasional unknowing import or mustang :-) In talking to Don and several others, it looks like one of the Precision's TA or TE 3 bolts would work for me..Whether it's a 49 or 44 or 61, I dont know..Clearly more power is better, but I want to maintain driveablility as well..I dont think I really have a specific 1/4 time(maybe in the low 12's or 11's on race gas once in a while)..I hope this all made sense and sorry for the long windedness !! Any advise would be greatly appreciate before I call Don back and place an order ..TIA...JB

I personally would want to know exactly what was on my car before tossing it as unusable.

Having said that however sometimes having new parts to install ready at hand should you need the car quickly will keep the labor costs down such as replacing a converter when you remove the other one that you don't know what it is. Nothing wrong with using a good 3200 stall lockup. :)

I'd start with the converter unless you can tell by looking at the one you have by removing the shield what it is.

Also a couple of stall checks you can do such as footbrake and flash stall tests.

Turbo should be able to be figured out with numbers or simple measurements to find out it's size and what stall that would work well with it.

Information is always good to get first.

good advice...what is a flash test ?? When I do the footbrake test, the stall seems to be about 2600rpms..using a modis scanner and the old scantool scanner..I dont think there is anything "wrong" with my current turbo, just doesnt seem to have a whole lot of low end go..Seems to really take a while to get spooled up, once it does though, it really goes! I've ran a couple gallons of xylene through with 112 chip and it seems to make a TON of power at high boost..It'll primarily be driven on the street to deliver the occasional spanking so I think that a more quick spooling, streetable turbo would be better for me at this point..besides, there's alway e-bay to sell the Turbonetics! I did find one receipt and all it said was "Stage III Turbo"..thanks for the reply!

if its a stage 3 thats not a bad turbo. i used to have one and it pulled pretty hard through second gear and upstairs.i went to a ta 60 and it spoools up a lot quicker and will even with 2600 stall. its a bit bigger than a 49.:D

Put the stall in...You will fall in love with your turbo after that..

thanks for the replies !I should have the convertor by the weekend..will give it a whirl with the higher stall speed and see what's what before I go any further..Eventually, I'll figure everything on this car out, and by then it will be time to replace it all !! :D

thanks again..

Just a suggestion but try a different chip as well. Some of those race chips run real rich down low and can cause slow spool-up. I've heard nothing but good things about chips by Turbotweak. After I get my cooling problems solved I will be giving Eric a call to get me one.

Yeah, both the chips I have(93 and 108) are Red Armstrong chips..I have a buddy with an almost identical setup as mine, he got a bunch of chips with his...give them a shot too..Thanks

if you are going to nuy a sall converter spend the extra cash and get a 3500 rpm one or better... always plan for the future..3500 rpms stall is still well mannered for the street and a 3200 rpms is is not enough for a stage3 in my humble opinion...

just a thought..
mike
